A-B.) Rhythm and Rhythms
- From the greek word “rhythmos”, derived from “rhein” means “to flow”. In other arts,
as well as in nature, the idea of rhythm also occurs.
- Rhythm in music however, is the placement of sounds in time.

- Dance is the movement of the body in a rhythmic way, usually to music and within a given
space, for the purpose of expressing an idea or emotion, releasing energy, or simply taking
delight in the movement itself.
- While Dancing is an activity of taking part in a dance, the action word of dance. It is also a
form of expressing one’s emotions through movement discipline by rhythm.

2. Rhythmic activities – it refers to bodily responses to any type of rhythmic


accompaniment that will provide leeway to the provide leeway to the people to satisfy
their need for self-expression.

Types of Rhythmic Activities


Folk Dance
Promotes national goodwill through describing the habits, custom and beliefs of
the people all over the world.
Social Dance
This type of dance develops the individual’s ability to communicate, mingle and
socialized with other people. it is also preparing the person to the basic dance
steps, positions, movements and rhythms.
Ballroom Dancing
It is a type of social dancing, It is performed in various contexts, including
invitational and public dance events, professional dance exhibitions, and formal
competitions.

3. Fundamentals of Rhythm
It is the regular recurrence of accented and unaccented beats.

4. Elements of Rhythm.
Beat – the underlying pulse of a rhythm.
Tempo – rate of speed of a movement.
Intensity – variation of stress of movement.
Pitch – lowness or highness of a tone.
Accent – emphasis on certain beats.
Meter – the regular recurrence of beats which divides a musical design into
measure.
Phares – Measures grouped together.
Bar – in music a vertical line across a staff dividing it into equal measures of time.
Count – a pulse beat, a time limit.
Note – a printed symbol of musical tone.
Measure – a group of beats.
Note Pattern – refers to the note or set of notes with or without rest used for a
certain dance step.
Step pattern – refers to the movement or movements done for each of the dance
steps.
