PURPOSE
To ensure the effective control of barley spillages thereby minimising effluent pollution, production
losses and disturbances to the aesthetic status of the environment
SCOPE
This procedure is applicable to Kwekwe Maltings
RESPONSIBILITY
The malting technician has the first level responsibility for the implementation of this procedure
The Process Manager has the second level responsibility for the implementation of this procedure.

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION

ACTIVITY

Barley Spillages(Unprocessed Barley)


Barley spillages at intake are handled as follows-:
1. Floors are cleaned and blown dry where necessary before barley movement
2. The barley is visually assessed, recovered and put back into the system if it is not contaminated by oil or
grease
3. Spoilt barley is treated as waste and disposed as per [BMS P9].
Spillages from the Barley transfer system
1. Conveyor and elevator systems are regularly inspected for damage
2. Repairs and replacement of damaged or worn out equipment carried out timeously.
3. A running check is done on the barley transport system before any barley movement
4. Barley spillages from conveyor and elevator systems is visually assessed
Treated following steps 2 & 3
5. Grain spillages into the drainage system are prevented from reaching effluent drains by using perforated
plates or screens
6. Damages on the perforated plates or screens are repaired and screens replaced where necessary timeously
Malt Spillages
1. Malt transport systems are checked for integrity and cleanliness before any malt movement
2. A running check is carried out prior to malt movement to check for any potential mechanical faults that may
lead to breakdowns resulting in any leakages or spillages
3. The system is stopped where and when a spillage or sign of default is noticed.
4. Repairs are done expeditiously and checks done to see if the problem has been rectified before any further
malt movement
5. Spilled Malt is visually assessed for physical quality attributes including contamination and recovered into the
system if usable
6. Spoilt Malt is treated as waste [BMS P9]
