Any questions sent by email should receive a response within two business days or during the following
class if it occurs within the 48 hours following receipt of the email. Note that the professor reserves the
right not to answer an email if the level of language used is inadequate.
The classical model of multiple linear regression. Relaxation of the classical least-squares assumptions:
autocorrelation, heteroscedasticity and multicollinearity. Generalized least-squares estimation.
Simultaneous equation models: foundation, specification, identification, and estimation. Indirect least-
squares and two-stage least squares methods of estimation. Distributed-lag models. Dummy variables.
Pooling cross-section and time-series data. This course is equivalent to ECON 5027 at Carleton University.
The goal of this course is to increase students’ understanding of econometric techniques and concepts. The
first part of the course will consist of an in-depth review of the theoretical foundations of the least-squares
estimation. The second part of the course will look at other estimation methods used when the necessary
hypotheses for the validity of the least-squares estimator do not hold. Even if this course emphasizes the

EVALUATION
The assignments are due on September 20, 27, October 4, 11, November 1, 8, 22, and 29. The assignments
must be deposited in the department drop box (next to FSS 9058) before 16:25. Late assignments will not
be accepted.
The final exam is composed by Francesca Rondina, but she expects students to understand the main
concepts taught in Louis-Philippe Morin’s part.
If you miss an exam, a midterm or an assignment due date, you must provide a valid medical certificate1
within five business days after the midterm/due date. Furthermore, in the case of an exam, students will
have to submit to the Department office in FSS 9005 a “Request for a Deferred Mark” form within five
business days of the date of the exam. The request must respect all the conditions of Academic Regulation
I-9 (https://www.uottawa.ca/administration-and-governance/academic-regulation-9-evaluation-of-student-
learning). Reasons such as travel will not be accepted as reasons for missing an exam except in exceptional
cases that are properly documented. Students who missed the midterm for medical reasons and who have
satisfied the conditions mentioned above will have to write a make-up midterm within five business days
after the scheduled midterm date. Students who did not hand in their assignment for medical reasons and
who have satisfied the conditions mentioned above will see the weights of each assignment change. For
example, the weight of each assignment will become 2.857 % of the final grade if there is one missing
assignment. Finally, students who cannot attend the final exam for medical reasons and who have met the
above requirements will have to write a deferred final exam on January 10, 2020.
COURSE OUTLINE
1
Only medical certificates from doctors certified by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario or
the College of Psychologists of Ontario, or their Québec equivalents, are considered to be valid medical
certificates. Certificates from naturopaths, homeopaths, doctors of traditional Chinese medicine, etc., will
not be accepted.

6) Multicollinearity & Model Stability
7) Stationary Time Series
8) Non-Spherical Disturbances 2 (Serial Correlation)
9) Introduction to Panel Data Analysis
10) Introduction to Nonstationary Data Analysis
The assignments will consist of theoretical and empirical questions. I suggest you use Stata to work on the
empirical questions as it is widely used (probably the most popular statistical software in economics) and
it is the main software I work with. Stata is installed in the computer labs (VNR2008, VNR2015 and
VNR2025). Students can also purchase Stata at a reasonable price. I will give one or two Stata introductory
tutorial sessions during the semester.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
You will also be judged on your writing abilities. It is recommended to take the appropriate
measures to avoid mistakes such as spelling, syntax, punctuation, inappropriate use of terms,
etc. You may be penalized up to 15%, to the professor’s discretion.
Late submissions are not tolerated. Exceptions are made only for illness or other serious situations
deemed as such by the professor. There will be a penalty for late submissions. University
regulations require all absences from exams and all late submissions due to illness to be supported
by a medical certificate.
Absence for any other serious reason must be justified in writing, to the academic assistants of
the Faculty, within five business days following the date of the exam or submission of an
assignment. The Faculty reserves the right to accept or refuse the reason. Reasons such as travel,
jobs, or any misreading of the examination timetable are not acceptable.
The University of Ottawa does not tolerate any form of sexual violence. Sexual violence refers to
any act of a sexual nature committed without consent, such as rape, sexual harassment or
online harassment. The University, as well as student and employee associations, offers a full
range of resources and services allowing members of our community to receive information and
confidential assistance and providing for a procedure to report an incident or make a complaint.
