QUESTION 1 (Marks: 20) (Total time: 16 minutes)

1) (Max Time: 2 minute)

………NO, because our homes, have a single phase voltage supply…..(4)
2)
a) (Max Time: 4 minutes)
……Configurations (b) and (c) are those for which Millman’s theorem is to be used. (3) This
because since the load is unbalanced, neutral point (n) of the voltage supply and the neutral
point (s) of the load will be at different potentials, which will cause the supply phase voltages
(Ean, Ebn, Ecn) to be different from the phase voltages (Vas, Vbs, Vcs) applied to the load.
Milman’s theoreom therefore help to find Vas, Vbs and Vcs, after calculation of Vsn (voltage
between neutral points n and s) (3)

b) (Max: 4 minutes)
…… Configurations (a) and (d) are those for which Millman’s theorem is not relevant. (3) This
because, configuration (a) is 3-phase delta-connected load, while Millman’s theory only applies
to an unbalanced 3-phase, 3-wire star-connected load. Configuration (d) is 3-phase star-
connected load with 4 wires. This means the neutral points of voltage supply (n) and that of the
load (s) are put at the same potential; Hence Vsn = Vs-Vn=0 (Vs = Vn) (3)

3)
a) (Max Time: 3 minutes)
 Phase supply voltage V ph  3.8 kV (0.5) and line supply voltage

VL  3 V ph  3  3.8  6.6 kV (0.5)

 The reason is that since the supply is usually in star-connection, its phase voltage has to be same as
the rated phase voltage of the motor (connected in star). (1)

b) (Max Time: 3 minutes)

VL 3.8
 Line supply voltage VL  3.8 kV (0.5) and phase supply voltage V ph    2.2 kV (0.5)
3 3
 The reason is that since the supply is usually in star-connection, its line voltage will be same as the
phase voltage of the motor. (1)
QUESTION 2 (Marks: 30) (Max Time: 36 mins)

An unbalanced, three-phase, three-wire load is star-connected to a balanced, three-phase, 400V (line

voltage) symmetrical supply system as shown in Figure 2. The impedances of the load are Za =(12-j20) ꭥ,
Zb = (15+j18) ꭥ and Zc = (15+j17). If Eb <10° is considered as reference with a negative phase sequence,
