I. Introduction

HIGH
HIGH
Prior to the implementation of the K to 12 program by the Department of Education, students

SCHOOL
coming from every school in the region tend to find better facilities to develop their knowledge

SCHOOL
and capabilities as a student as they enter Senior High School. Iloilo National High School is one

of the prestigious schools in Western Visayas and this may attract students from various

municipalities and cities from the region to develop their learning skills as they prepare for

college. According to Swanson and Schneider (1999), students who transfer between eight and

tenth grade had a positive effect on academics gains in the last two years of their education.

Although students found schools to develop their knowledge, those who comes from

provinces still wants to transfer in the city for education, factors like the environment of the

school, the peer groups, neighbourhoods or family situations may affect the performance of the

student for the first few months of their education and so they must adapt in order to show a

good performance. Some students decide to board in order to live nearby the school and lessen

transportation expenses and there are some students still want to live in their homes in the

province and there also students who already established and live in the city. This study aims to

know the difference in the academic performance or the General Average of STEM 11 students

with different residences in the first half or the first semester of the school year 2019-2020

II. Methodology

HIGH
HIGH
Data Gathering

SCHOOL
Sixty INHS STEM Grade 11 participants, with at least 8 participants per section

SCHOOL
regardless of gender, were surveyed about the place where they stay after their classes and their

general average in the first semester.

Data Analysis

ANOVA or Analysis of Variance was used to determine if there was a difference in the

academic performances between the students who are living in the city, province, and boarding

houses.

Raw Data

The group mean of academic performance level of students who lives in the province, city,

HIGH
HIGH
and boarding house were measured and compared to each other. The mean of students who lives

SCHOOL
in the boarding house is 92, making them the best performer among the group followed by those

SCHOOL
who are in the province with the mean of 91. Those who are living in the city with a mean of

90.65 have the least performance. ANOVA showed that there is no significant difference

between the academic performance of Grade 11 STEM students who are living in the city,

province, and boarding house.

Further studies should be done on this topic using a larger group of samples and other

population like the other sections is recommended.
