Worm Gear Assembly

Introduction

The worm gear is a gear consisting of a spiral thread shaft that engages and drives a toothed
wheel. Worm gears are an old style of gear and one of the six simple machines. Basically, a
worm gear is a screw butted against what looks like a standard spur gear with slightly angled,
curved teeth.

The rotational movement changes by 90 degrees, and the plane of motion also changes due
to the position of the worm on the worm wheel (or simply "the wheel"). They are usually made
up of a steel worm and a brass wheel.

This activity uses drawing tools, assembly, assemblies and features commonly used to make
gears in SolidWorks to create a model of a worm gear. The motion of the worm gear assembly
will be realized with the help of the SolidWorks animation feature.

Results

The components and assembly of the worm gears were carried out following the step-by-step
procedure and guidance found in the guide videos. These components are the worm gear and
the worm wheel. Also, the drawing sheet of the assembly is attached at end of this portion,
the drawing sheet template that is used is one of the built-in templates of SolidWorks. In
addition, after using the animation feature of SolidWorks, the motion of the worm gear was
realized by configuring certain functions of the motion manager. The animation is included in
the assembly file, which is also attached, together with this laboratory report.

Conclusions

The fundamentals and functions of SolidWorks were realized and applied at the end of the
exercise. Methods performed, such as the placement and use of access in the positioning of
objects, the extrusion of a sketch into a 3D object, and the use of a chamfer and a filet, and
features commonly used to make gears that were necessary to perform the activity, were
easily applied. The motion of the Worm Gear was also realized with the help of the SolidWorks
animation feature, the motion manager or the motion study feature. In addition, the drawing
sheet of the assembly was made easily using the built-in template provided by the SolidWorks.

As far as the computer program is concerned, SolidWorks eliminates the burden of presenting
and constructing a particular element or machine over such a period of time. The various
components and the machine to be constructed and evaluated are visually detailed and clearly
identified with its tools and features. Mastering this skill with the assistance of a computer
program would undoubtedly give the engineering sector a better future.
