Damper Description
The spring-coupled torsional vibration
damper provides hydraulic damping. A
clamping ring (3) clamps the spring
packs (1) and intermediate pieces (2)
together. The inner ends of the spring
packs (1) reach into the axial grooves of
the inner star (9). Chambers (A, B)
formed by the intermediate pieces (2)
and the spring packs (1) are filled with oil.
If torque is applied to the damper, the
outer part (1, 2, 3, 5, 7) and the inner part
(9) of the damper twist against each
other, and the radially arranged spring
blades (1) deflect to transmit elastic
torque. This changes the volume of oil in
chambers A and B. The oil displaces
from one chamber into the adjoining one
through a narrow gap. The resultant oil
flow resistance delays the relative move-
ment of both damper parts (outer and
inner) and dampens torsional vibrations. FIGURE 1 Typical Damper
The main bolts (750) connect the middle
piece of the damper (1, 2, 3) to the flange (5) and side plate (7) through friction locking. The flange (5) and
side plate (7) with their seals hold the oil in the damper to build up required working pressure.

Transport
CAUTION: Improper damper transport and lifting may cause it to fall. Allow only personnel
licensed to operate cranes and industrial trucks and familiar with operating instructions to
lift and handle the damper. Always provide supports for overhanging components. Failure
to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury, property damage, or both.

l Transport damper only with the transport lock (if present) mounted.
l Transport damper only in a horizontal position.
l Do not tilt the shipping crate or pallet.
l Avoid hard impacts during transport.
l Maximum lifting speed: 50 m/min.
l Do not damage packaging and preserving agents.

Lifting Tackle
CAUTION: Lifting tackle can break or fail when lifting the damper, particularly when
attached to an engine. USE ONLY HIGH-STRENGTH LIFTING TACKLE TO LIFT THE
DAMPER. The nominal carrying capacity of a SINGLE lifting device must be greater than the
total weight of the damper or component carried! Failure to do so can result in serious per-
sonal injury, damper damage, or both.

The lifting tackle supplied with the order is loadable from all sides. All lifting tackle must be:
l approved in the country where it will be used.
l in compliance with all applicable national and international safety specifications.
l undamaged and without corrosion.
l 100% crack-tested.
l completely screwed into the damper tapped lifting holes without damaging them.
l mounted and used in accordance with the manufacturer operating instructions and FIGURE 2.

CAUTION: Verify lifting tackle tightness before lifting and lift the damper using only the
tapped holes marked for lifting! Incorrect tightening or using incorrect holes may cause ser-
ious personal injury, property damage, or both. Check tapped holes before assembling the
lifting tackle. The tapped hole cannot be used if:

• the thread is damaged, chipped, corroded, crossed, or distorted

• there are signs of rework such as Helicoil screw thread inserts

Using tapped holes with any of these conditions may cause serious personal injury, prop-
erty damage, or both.

Lifting Requirements
l Use the lifting tackle provided.
l Use suitable carrying straps such as ropes, chains, or belts.
l Fit lifting tackle and carrying straps in accordance with the regulations.
l Attach at least two lifting points simultaneously.
l Distribute the load as evenly as possible.

CAUTION: Never lift the damper using only one connection point for the lifting tackle and
never stand under a suspended load. The damper may break loose resulting in serious per-
sonal injury, property damage, or both.

Packaging and Storage
Product parts are sealed in polythene film and all metal parts are protected against corrosion. They are
placed in crates made of soft wood or on wooden pallets. NOTE: Special packaging may also be used per
customer requirements.

CAUTION: If packaging is damaged, the damper must be either installed in the system
within 100 hours or preservatives must be reapplied and the packaging restored to its ori-
ginal condition. Failure to do so reduces damper service life.

Storage
l Do not damage packaging or preserving agents.
l Do not stack dampers or place heavy parts on top of them.
l Store damper in dry conditions. Maximum permissible relative humidity: 85%.
l Avoid variations in temperature of more than 25°C.
l Maintain permissible temperature range for o-rings and seals during storage.

CAUTION: If temperature rises above or falls below the permissible range for seals during
storage, it may damage the seals and reduce damper service life.

Damper Installation
1. Fully assemble the damper.
2. Verify oil feed and return bores are unobstructed, debris-free, and clean. Remove any masking tape.
3. Clean rust inhibitor from all flange-mounting surfaces and centering shoulders.

CAUTION: Do not scratch or damage surfaces during cleaning. Scratched or damaged sur-
faces may cause improper damper operation and reduce service life.

4. Verify flange o-rings (for oil supply and venting) are well-greased and undamaged.
5. Install damper in accordance with safety, transport, and lifting instructions of this document.

CAUTION: Do not damage centering shoulders, seals, or sealing surfaces during mounting.
Any damage may cause improper damper operation and reduce service life.

Post-Installation Checks
CAUTION: Remove lifting tackle and ancillary installation tools (if present) from damper and
store for later use. Failure to do so may cause serious personal injury, damage to the
damper, or both. If no oil flows from one or several oil circulation bores, determine the
cause and correct it. Failure to do so may cause improper damper operation and reduce ser-
vice life.

Prime damper with a pre-lubrication pump until oil flows from the oil circulation bores.
The damper flange (5) or side plate (7) typically has a tapped hole for a pressure gauge to measure oil pres-
sure in the damper when the engine is not running.

General Mounting Instructions for Bolts

Cleaning Threaded Parts
Before handling the threaded parts using the assembly tools, clean contact surfaces carefully and thor-
oughly. These include:
l Bolt head contact surface and thread (see "A" below)
l Both contact surfaces of nuts (if present) and the thread (see "B" below)
l Both sides of washers (see "C" below)
l Threaded holes (if present) of the counter piece (see "D" below)
l Contact surfaces on parts being connected (see "E" below)

FIGURE 3 Cleaning Threaded Parts

For oxidized contact surfaces, carefully remove oxide layers with a wire brush. After removal, clean and
degrease all contact surfaces thoroughly with isoparaffin or acetone.

CAUTION: Do not touch degreased and cleaned contact surfaces with bare hands, espe-
cially if Loctite is used for the assembly. Re-clean any new dirt or grease from contact sur-
faces. Failure to do so may affect damper performance.

Use of Auxiliary Materials for Assembly
For assembly, treat contact surfaces and threads with seal and/or bolt locking agents like Loctite or lubricant
like engine oil. See relevant assembly drawing for auxiliary material types and applications in the table
“Mounting instructions for bolts”.

CAUTION: Before applying auxiliary materials, dry contact surfaces thoroughly! Failure to
do so may affect damper performance.

NOTE: Always use Loctite within the processing time specified by Loctite. See instructions for
specific Loctite products for processing times. Do not exceed maximum processing time per-
mitted! Keep processing times as short as possible. Read the relevant Loctite manual first.
Before applying auxiliary materials, calculate the load-bearing thread length "X" for parts connected
together. Wet this thread length with the auxiliary material across the entire area. Use an amount that per-
mits only small quantities of excess auxiliary material overflow after assembly. A test assembly is recom-
mended to estimate the amount required.
Washers: Apply auxiliary material to both the front and back of washers. Use enough to cover the contact
surface completely with only small quantities of excess auxiliary material overflow after assembly. A test
assembly is recommended to estimate the amount required. Disc springs and wedge lock washers are used
to lock bolts (see FIGURE 4).

FIGURE 4 Washer Installations

Tightening process
Tighten opposing pairs of bolts one after another in a star pattern. Torque values, bolt tightening procedure,
and application area for auxiliary materials appear in the “Mounting instruction for bolts” on the assembly
drawing. Immediately after bolt assembly completion, remove excess residue of auxiliary materials (espe-
cially Loctite residue).

Re-use
If bolt connections secured or sealed using Loctite are unfastened, completely remove any old Loctite
residue from the bolts using a wire brush. Remove old Loctite residue from threaded connections and
internal threads (e.g. with nuts) as well. Afterwards, prepare all parts for re-assembly (see"General Mount-
ing Instructions for Bolts").

CAUTION: Replace all washers from unfastened bolt connections with new washers. Failure
to do so may affect damper performance.
