DESMI VIL Pump vs.

Regular HSC Pump

Arguments for choosing VIL over HSC
DESMI VIL Pump vs. Regular HSC Pump
Arguments for choosing VIL over HSC
DESMI VIL Pump vs. Regular HSC Pump
1. Construction Vertical In Line Construction Horizontal Split Case
• Vertical Inline, single-stage , single or double suction impeller • Horizontal Split Case ,single stage, double suction impeller
• Radially split • Horizontally split
• Spacer or direct coupling • Spacer coupling
• Foot/base plate to support the vertical arrangement of pump & motor. • Base frame to support the motor & pump for vibration & proper
alignment
Advantage of VIL Pumps over HSC Pumps
2. Compact Design
Area Saving • Base frame mounted pumps take up a lot of room, particularly the Horizontal Split Case.
• The Vertical Inline pump takes only very little floor space – not much more than the piping itself.
Easy Installation • The factory assembled and aligned VIL pump can be put into place immidiately, whereas installation
of the HSC is often more time consuming because of the needs of alignment, assembly etc.

• The pump is an in-line, radially split, single-stage centrifugal pump with connecting flanges according
to international standards.
• The pump is designed for mounting with electric motors having different international flange
dimensions.
• The pump casing is equipped with a replaceable sealing ring. The impeller is made with double-
curved blades to ensure low NPSH-values and high efficiency.
• The bearing unit is equipped with sturdy ball bearings and the small types are fitted with lifetime-
lubricated bearings. In the larger types the lower bearing is a double bearing for which a lubrication
point is provided.
Advantage of VIL Pumps over HSC Pumps
3. Pump/motor Alignment
• Factory alignment of VIL pumps with either a direct-close coupling or a spacer
coupling - eliminates any need of alignment during installation or later in the
pump’s life.

• The HSC is floor mounted and often aligned on-site during installation.
This results in vibration issues because of small misalignments which means
unnecessary wear of critical pump components (bearings and seals)
Advantage of VIL Pumps over HSC Pumps
4. Easy Maintenance & Service for VIL

DESMI VIL pumps with spacer coupling (versions -

13, -14 and -15) allow the mechanical seal to be
removed for service without having to remove the
motor from the pump.

DESMI close coupled versions (-02 and -12) may

need the motor removed to replace the seal, but
after seal replacement, re-installing the motor and
coupling automatically brings the unit back to
factory alignment specifications.

Advantage of VIL Pumps over HSC Pumps
Difficulty for HSC Maintenance & Service

The Mechanical Seal is the critical maintenance item in any pump.

Most base mounted HSC pumps must be taken apart to find the
defective mechanical seal.

Some of the newer HSC pump designs, allow for easier access to the
outboard (non-drive end) bearing and seal. However, they still need
the pump side coupling removed to access the inboard (drive end)
bearing housing in order for the bearing and seal to be taken out for
replacement.

Advantage of VIL Pumps over HSC Pumps
5. Less Vibration, Wear & Noise

VIL pumps have low hydraulic noise and vibration. The vertically mounted
dynamically balanced impeller rotates over the center line of the piping.
The static loads acting on the pump shaft at rest, which are the weight of
impeller and weight of the shaft that produces a bending moment in horizontal
pumps, are eliminated in VIL pumps.

This weight of the impeller and shaft cause a more significant wear on the
bearings and seals of a HSC pump than what is the case with a VIL pump.
Advantage of VIL Pumps over HSC Pumps
6. Reliable performance

A study done by Shell Oil compared VIL pumps to base mounted Minimum
horizontal pumps. It showed a 48% higher reliability for the VIL vs. service
base mounted horizontal pumps, based on recorded failure rate per
million hours of operation.

There are no pump bearings to service on DESMI´s Vertical In-line Less

A12 Monobloc version, eliminating a component that requires shutdown
maintenance and could fail.
Life of sliding bearing is around 10 years for DSL –short spacer ,
making need for service much less specially in bigger pump sizes. Continuous
operation
Advantage of VIL Pumps over HSC Pumps
7. Cost !
The VIL pump is a more simple construction than a HSC pump.
Therefore, the cost of a VIL pumps mainly lower than a corresponding the cost of
Horizontal pumps both for the running costs and the service costs!
Life Cycle cost of Pumps-what's matter ?
Energy Cost or Pump Cost !

Life-Cycle Costs of a pump

LCC of a pumping system is calculated as:
LCC = Cic + Cin + Ce + Co + Cm + Cs + Cenv + Cd

Cic = initial costs, purchase price

Cin = installation and commissioning costs
Ce = energy costs
Co = operating costs

20-25
Cm = maintenance and repair costs
Cs = downtime costs (loss of production)
Cenv = environmental costs
Cd = decommissioning/disposal costs
Years

The most significant life cycle costs are initial costs, Illustration – Example:
, and service costs.
1. Initial cost (incl. installation) – 10%
Energy costs are by far the greatest of all costs! 2. Maintenance cost (incl. downtime) – 5%
3. Energy cost – 85 %

3 . Using full size impeller instead of trimmed impeller Benifits of full size impeller :

• Duty Point achieved by choosing pump with full

size impeller and adjusting the rpm UP to hit
max. duty point. (is often HIGHER than nominal
rpm) Max duty point power consumption
determines the motor size.

• Pump always works at optimal efficiency point

due to max size impeller and speeding up/down
of pump.

5 . Oversized Duplex Stainless Steel Pumps (AISI329) Shafts

Benifits of Desmi Pump Shafts:

• Oversized for speeds at 60 Hz

• All pumps suitable to be used with variation of rpm speeds using

VFD operation

(torsion)

• Industrial standard shaft diameters to be used with standard

mechanical seal & standard bearings
Energy Optimized Pump Features by
Desmi Pump Benifits of VFD optimized operation :

• If needed – Pump speed can be adjusted to actual need, thus

6 . Using VFD to achieve demand of flow & head saving energy. (VFD use is not limited to applications with flow
variations)

• Pump always works at optimal efficiency point due to max size

impeller and speeding up/down of pump.

• Typically, you will end up with a smaller pump + smaller motor

than the non-VFD full speed pump.
• Variable-frequency drives (VFD’s) working with pumps, allow for
smooth starting (ramping) & reduces the stress on the motor &
network

• Applying VFD’s to pumps enables speed adjustment according to

actual need and allows pumps to work at optimal efficiency
throughout the system curve. They also allow for limit settings
providing full control over pumps.

• Combination of VFD & High efficiency motor will usually provide

substantial energy savings. Example - If the flow is reduced by
20%, the power consumption is reduced by 50%.
