Design of beams for shear
• Brittle failure
• Occurs with little warning
• Provide shear reinforcement – links or stirrups
• Increases the shear resistance and ductility to reduce
the probability of a brittle failure

Design shear reinforcement for a 6m simply supported beam,
with a uniformly distributed dead load of 40kN/m and a
uniformly distributed imposed load of 12kN/m. The dead load
includes self-weight. Detail accordingly.
