MATH 1101: Finite Mathematics A2-1

Assignment 2
This assignment is based on the material in Unit 2. It is marked out of a total of 95 and is
worth 10% of your final grade.
Read the “General Instructions” before completing this assignment.

1. Sketch and shade the region that corresponds to the solution set for the following
system of inequalities and indicate whether the solution set is bounded or unbounded.
Label all boundary lines and the exact coordinates of all corner points (if any) on your
graph.

2 x  3 y  12
2 x  3 y  6
(15 marks)
3x  y  4
0  x  4, y0

2. Use the “method of corners” to find the maximum and minimum values, if they exist, of
z  3x  2 y subject to the constraints:
x  2 y  10
3 x  y  10 (16 marks)
x  0, y  0

3. A greeting card company has 325 boxes of a particular card in Warehouse I and 300
boxes of the same card in Warehouse II. A greeting card shop in Whistler orders 200
boxes of this card and another shop in Kelowna orders 250 boxes. The shipping costs
per box to these two shops from the two warehouses are shown in the table below.

Whistler Kelowna

Warehouse I $0.22 $0.21

Warehouse II $0.23 $0.24

Using the “method of corners”, determine how many boxes should be shipped to each
city from each warehouse to minimize the shipping costs. What is the minimum cost?

A2-2 Assignment 2

4. A small country can grow only two crops for export, coffee and lima beans. The
country has at least 400,000 hectares of land available for crops. Long-term
contracts require at least 120,000 hectares be devoted to coffee and at least
250,000 hectares to lima beans. Since lima beans must be processed locally and
there are limits on local production, at most 300,000 hectares of land can be
devoted to growing lima beans. Coffee requires 2 workers per hectare to harvest,
with lima beans requiring 4 workers per hectare. No more than 1,500,000
workers are available to harvest these crops. The sale of coffee produces a profit
of $225 per hectare, while lima beans produce a profit of $450 per hectare. Using
the “method of corners”, determine how many hectares of land the country
should devote to each crop in order to maximize profit. What is the maximum
profit? (25 marks)

5. Write a system of linear inequalities that describes the shaded region below.
Showing all your work, determine the exact coordinates of the corner points
labeled A, B, C, and D. (14 marks)
