Quick Reference Guide # 7 Global Survey Limited

Purpose: Setup the instrument, stakeout points, download a log file.


Instrument: TPS 1200 Series

The operator stands at the Robotic Controller in this guide. This guide assumes
that points have already been loaded into the instrument, either through the ASCII
interface, or by creating a Points, Lines and Areas job.

Further information: Refer to your instrument reference manual for detailed


instructions

1. Prepare instrument and turn on


a. Place the instrument on tripod, clamp tribrach and level it using plate bubble
b. Check battery is present in the instrument
c. Check Compact Flash card is present in the instrument (refer to diagram
inside card door for correct placement of card. Do not remove the card when
the instrument is turned On.)
d. Press and hold ON button for 1 second. “Main menu” appears.
2. Level the instrument
a. From the main menu, press SHIFT, then F12
b. Fine tune level bubble using digital display
i. To adjust laser plummet intensity, press PAGE (F6) and use cursor
keys to change settings
c. When level, press CONT (F1). Main menu appears.
3. Access and Configure the Stakeout Program
a. Use cursor keys to highlight the Programs icon. Press CONT (F1)
b. Use Up/Down cursor keys to highlight the Stakeout program. Press CONT
(F1).
c. Press CONF (F2) to configure the way that Stakeout will work.
Note - Refer to the screen images later in this document for detailed Configuration
information
d. Press Enter to view the available Stakeout Jobs.
Note – The stakeout job contains the design data that has been transferred to the instrument
i. Select the correct job and press CONT (F1)
e. Press Enter to view the available Jobs
Note – The Job is where new measurements will be stored. This may be a new job (Press New
(F2) to create a new job), or an existing job (Press enter to view a list of existing jobs)
i. Select the Job and press CONT (F1)
f. Choose an appropriate Codelist, Configuration set and Prism and press CONT
(F1)
4. Orientate the instrument
a. From the Stakeout Begin menu, press SETUP (F3). The Station Setup menu
appears
i. Press Enter to view a list of Fixpoint jobs. Hint – Fixpoint jobs
generally hold control or known coordinates. Use the Up/Down cursor
keys to select the job you have created and Press CONT (F2)

ii. Press enter to view a list of possible Setup methods. Hint – Known
azimuth requires an instrument coordinate and an azimuth. Known BS
Point requires known instrument and backsight coordinates. Use the
cursor keys and press Enter to select the method you require. Press
CONT (F1). The Select Station menu appears.
1. Press Enter to open a list of available known points.
2. Use the Cursor keys to select an existing point and Press Enter
to select it, or press NEW (F2) to create a New point.
a. Give the point an ID, Northing, Easting and Height.
b. Press STORE (F1) to store the new point. Select it from
the point list and press CONT (F1)
3. Enter the instrument height. Press CONT (F1). The
4. Key in a known azimuth, or repeat the above steps to select a
known BS point depending on the method chosen.
5. Point the instrument at the Backsight prism or Reference Point
and press SET (F1) to set the orientation of the instrument.
6. Press OK (F4) to accept the advisory message. The Stakeout
Menu appears.
5. Stakeout Points.
Note – To switch between different views in the Stakeout program, use PAGE (F6). Most Stakeout
work will be carried out on the Stake page, but the Map page is also a very useful view of the data and
allows graphical selection of points.
Note – To change the behavior of the EDM, press USER – EDM & ATR modes. Use the EDM in
Tracking mode to navigate to a point. Although it is not necessary, you may choose to use Fast mode
to take individual shots to the pole to establish a final position or as-built coordinate.
a. Select the correct Point ID using the Point List
i. Press Enter to view a list of available points, use the cursor keys to
highlight the correct point and press CONT (F1) to select the point and
return to the Stake page.
b. Or, select the correct Point using the Map view.
i. Press Enter to view a list of available points, then PAGE (F6) to the
Map view.
Note – Resize the map view using ZOOM+ (F4), ZOOM- (F5), Shift FIT (Shift F3),
Shift CTR (Shift F4) and use the cursor keys to pan around the display.
Note – Configure the map view using Shift CONF (Shift F2) and choose what data to
display on the map view. Hint – The map view can become cluttered if too much
information is displayed. Use this function to remove display data from the map
view.
ii. Use the touch screen to select the point you intend to stake. Press
CONT (F1) to choose the point.
Note – If multiple points are nearby the one selected, a list of points will appear.
Choose the correct point and press CONT (F1)
iii. Press CONT (F1) to return to the Stake screen
c. With the EDM in Tracking mode, and the correct prism height entered,
navigate to the design point. Establish the peg in the ground.
Note – Press DIST (F2) to start the tracking measurements. Use Lock Interrupt to temporarily
prevent the instrument from trying to track the prism while you are putting the peg in. Use
Lock Resume with the instrument back on the peg to resume operations.
d. Place the prism pole on top of the peg, and press DIST (F2).

e. Once the pole is steady, and a distance has been obtained, press STOP (F1),
then REC (F3)
f. Note the staked deltas and annotate the peg as required.
g. Press STORE (F3) to store the staked values to the Logfile.
h. Return to step 5a above to select the next point.
Note – Points that have been staked in the above manner will have a Flag icon next to them in
the point list as a visual indicator.
6. Exit the job
a. From the Stakeout screen, press ESC to back out to the main menu
7. Get the Logfile from the CF card
a. With the instrument back in the main menu, remove the CF card from the
instrument and place it in the card reader, or laptop.
b. Use Windows explorer to copy the file <logfile.txt> from the \DATA
directory of the CF card to a secure location on the laptop hard drive.
c. View the file using a text editor such as Word, Wordpad or Notepad.
8. Turn the instrument off
a. To turn the instrument off, press the PROG and USER keys simultaneously
for 1 second and release.

Display Mask: Provide quick access to

Closest Point: N/A for TPS
Auto Position: Instrument turns to chosen
design point in 2D or 3D with EGLs when
not set to ‘Off’.

Checks

Position Check and/or Height Check:


Reports differences between design and as-
staked coordinates if set to Yes and deltas
are larger than defined limits. Useful for
determining cut/fill values for the stake.

Beep Near Point: Audible signal when


approaching design point.

Heights

Height Offset: Stake a constant offset to all


heights
Edit Height: Allow editing of height value
before staking a point

Use DTM: Set to “DTM Only” if you have


loaded a DTM job and want to view
Cut/Fill values on the model. Set to “DTM
and Stake Job” if you want to view Cut/Fill
on the model and navigate to Points at the
same time.
Note – Anything other than “No” will create a
prompt for a DTM job name in the Stakeout Begin
Screen

Logfile

Write Logfile: Select Yes if you need a log


of design coords, as-built cords and deltas.

File Name: Enter the name of the ASCII


log file that will be stored on the CF Card
in the \Data directory.

Format File: Use TPS_Logfile.FRT as the


logfile format.
Note – Contact Global Survey if you do not have
this Format File.
