Quick Reference Guide # 11 Global Survey Limited

Purpose: Stakeout points using the GPS1200 Stakeout program.


Instrument: GPS 1200 Series

This guide assumes that points have already been loaded into the GPS1200, either
through the ASCII interface, or by creating a Points, Lines and Areas job. It also
assumes that the GPS Rover is operational and has initialized.

1. Access and Configure the Stakeout Program


a. Use cursor keys to highlight the Programs icon. Press CONT (F1)
b. Use Up/Down cursor keys to highlight the Stakeout program. Press CONT
(F1).
c. Press CONF (F2) to configure the way that Stakeout will work.
Note - Refer to the screen images later in this document for detailed Configuration
information
d. Press Enter to view the available “Stakeout Jobs”.
Note – The stakeout job contains the design data that has been transferred to the instrument
i. Select the correct job and press CONT (F1)
e. Press Enter to view the available “Jobs”
Note – The Job is where new measurements will be stored. This may be a new job (Press New
(F2) to create a new job), or an existing job (Press enter to view a list of existing jobs)
i. Select the Job and press CONT (F1)
f. Choose an appropriate Codelist and Configuration set and press CONT (F1)
2. Stakeout Points.
Note – To switch between different views in the Stakeout program, use PAGE (F6). Most Stakeout
work will be carried out on the Stake page, but the Map page is also a very useful view of the data and
allows graphical selection of points.

a. Select the correct Point ID using the Point List


i. Press Enter to view a list of available points, use the cursor keys to
highlight the correct point and press CONT (F1) to select the point and
return to the Stake page.
b. Or, select the correct Point using the Map view.
i. Press Enter to view a list of available points, then PAGE (F6) to the
Map view.
Note – Resize the map view using ZOOM+ (F4), ZOOM- (F5), Shift FIT (Shift F3),
Shift CTR (Shift F4) and use the cursor keys to pan around the display.
Note – Configure the map view using Shift CONF (Shift F2) and choose what data to
display on the map view. Hint – The map view can become cluttered if too much
information is displayed. Use this function to remove display data from the map
view.
ii. Use the touch screen to select the point you intend to stake. Press
CONT (F1) to choose the point.
Note – If multiple points are nearby the one selected, a list of points will appear.
Choose the correct point and press CONT (F1)
iii. Press CONT (F1) to return to the Stake screen

c. With the correct antenna height entered, navigate to the design point.
Establish the peg in the ground.
d. Place the GPS antenna pole on top of the peg, and press OCCUPY (F1).
e. Note the staked deltas and annotate the peg as required.
f. Press STORE (F3) to store the staked values to the Logfile.
g. Return to step 5a above to select the next point.
Note – Points that have been staked in the above manner will have a Flag icon next to them in
the point list as a visual indicator.
3. Exit the job
a. From the Stakeout screen, press ESC to back out to the main menu
4. Get the Logfile from the CF card
a. With the GPS1200 back in the main menu, remove the CF card from the
instrument and place it in the card reader, or laptop.
b. Use Windows explorer to copy the file <logfile.txt> from the \DATA
directory of the CF card to a secure location on the laptop hard drive.
c. View the file using a text editor such as Word, Wordpad or Notepad.
5. Turn the instrument off
a. To turn the instrument off, press the PROG and USER keys simultaneously
for 1 second and release.

Configuration for Stakeout

The following screen snaps explain the various configuration options in Stakeout (See
section 3c above for where this information fits in context.

General

Orientate: Orientation of graphics

Stake Mode: Method of delivering stakeout


instructions.
Display Mask: Provide quick access to
Survey screens from within Stakeout
Closest Point: Enables Near (F2) to
navigate to next closest point

Checks

Position Check and/or Height Check:


Reports differences between design and as-
staked coordinates if set to Yes and deltas
are larger than defined limits. Useful for
determining cut/fill values for the stake.

Beep Near Point: Audible signal when


approaching design point.

Heights

Height Offset: Stake a constant offset to all


heights

Edit Height: Allow editing of height value


before staking a point
Use DTM: Set to “DTM Only” if you have
loaded a DTM job and want to view
Cut/Fill values on the model. Set to “DTM
and Stake Job” if you want to view Cut/Fill
on the model and navigate to Points at the
same time.
Note – Anything other than “No” will create a
prompt for a DTM job name in the Stakeout Begin
Screen

Logfile

Write Logfile: Select Yes if you need a log


of design coords, as-built coords and
deltas.
File Name: Enter the name of the ASCII
log file that will be stored on the CF Card
in the \Data directory.

Format File: Use GPS_Logfile.FRT as the


logfile format.
Note – Contact Global Survey if you do not have
this Format File.
