BAND SAW NOTES

8-9-11

1. Operate only after proper instruction has been received and all tests passed.
2. Operate only with the teacher’s permission.
3. Safety glasses must be worn while operating the Band saw.
4. If someone is using the band saw, wait outside the safety zone and do not
disturb the operator.
5. Make all adjustments with the power off.
6. Adjust the blade guard to where it is 1/8" above the highest part of the object
being cut. Use the “pinky test” to make sure that it is safe to turn on the
machine and start cutting.
7. Never let your fingers or any part of your body or item of clothing get closer
than 2” of the blade.
8. Make sure all unnecessary items are removed from the table. Unnecessary
items can get caught in the band saw and can cause injuries
9. Use a push stick whenever practical.
10. Never force your project into the blade. Let the machine do the work. Do
not twist the blade or back work out with the machine on, you can break the
blade or pull it off the wheels.
11. If the band saw is not working properly, turn it off, and tell the teacher. If
you should break a blade, turn it off, unplug it, and have someone stay with
the band saw and have someone else go get the teacher. Do not leave the
machine unattended.
12. The thinner the blade, the sharper a curve you can cut. Wide blades,
gentle curves. Thin blades, sharper curves. Cut very sharp curves on the
scroll saw.
13. Your fingers should be on either side of the blade, never in line with it.
14. Make sure the dust collector is on and the vent is open if it has a dust
collector.
15. Remove the chips from the work area after the band saw is turned off and
the blade stopped. Use a table broom, never your hands.
16. Never leave the machine until it has come to a complete stop.
