FOUNDATIONS FOR STORAGE TANKS
1. SCOPE
This standard shall specity the minimum requirements for
off-site tankage foundation, types of which are classified
to two type of "Earth Foundations with a concrete .ringvall®
and “Earth Foundation without a concrete ringwall",
+ EARTH FOUNDATION WITHOUT | CONCRETE RINGHALE
2.1 Earth foundation without a concrete ringvali for
off-site storage tanks shall be used for the tanks up to
100'-0" in dianate and 48°-0" in height unless otherwise
specified in the Job specification, See KNPC Eng. sta.
43B15.1 for reference.
2.2 The subgrade must be capable of sustaining the load of
the tank and its contents without unequal settlement.
2.3 If the subgrade is weak and inadequate to carry the load
of the filled tank without excessive settlenent (6" of
more) one or a combination of the following methods
shall be used to improve the subgrade:
(2) Compact the soft material by removal of the water
+ content by drainage, if possible.
(2) Compact the soft material by preloading with an
overburden of earth or other material suitably
drained,
(3) Remove the objectionable material and replace with
sultable £111, vell compacted, ané tncresse
elevation above grade by the ancunt of antictpated
Settlement, Filling shall be done in 6” to 8"
layers and compacted with 950 density of a modified
Aasno by suleable mechanical aeens. See 4Ype 8

Tanks shall be set one foot (1'-0") minimum above the
Surrounding grade to prevent water from being trapped
beneath the tank. This also facilitates piping to the
lower edge of the tank.
Tank Shell Ring
‘The foundation beneath the shell perimeter shall be
compacted, 1* graded crushed atone with a sand asphalt
cover (See Paragraph 2.6 (1), this Standard),
‘The foundation shall be a six feet (6'-0") wide ring
with a -to-3 slope on both inside and outside (see
detail 43B15.1).
In grading the area, the maximum difference in
elevation under the total tank perimeter shall be one
inch. In each thirty feet (30'-0") of perimeter, the
Maximum difference in elevation shall be one half inch.
Tank Floor pase
The tank floor base shall ba composed of firm soil or
compacted bank run gravel covered with three inches
(3") Of 1" graded crushed stone or a four inch (4*)
thick oiled sand cushion, Total height must be a
minimum of 12" to match foindation height, plus
required slope.
Tank floor base shall slope from the center toward the
tank shell 1" in 10*-0* uni
Oiled sand cushion shall be grapared by mixing local
sitica sand and a non-corrosive ofl. the proportions
of the mix shall be developed by trial mixes,
(Approximately a gallon and one half of ofl to a cuble
foot of sand.) ‘The mixture should not “slunp* or
@lsintegrate when tested with a concrete “slunp moldROWAIT NATIONAL PETROLEUH CO. (K.S.C.) ENG. STD 43A2

(1) Yor detail of berm construction, see Engineering
Standard 43815.1.
(2) The berm cover shall extend from the outer toe of
the slope to three feet (3'-0") inside of the tank
perineter.
(3) The berm cover shall consist of a one inch (1*)
thick layer of sand asphalt.
(4) Sand asphalt ts a bot laid mixture of local sand
and a Liguid asphalt material, An intimate mix ts
required. Yor beat results the mixture should be
Prepared in a concrete mixer and laid the same day
it is mixed, Where available, prepared asphalt
mixes may be used.
(5) Where the anticipated contents of the tank will
interact with the off-or asphalt in the foundation
to form an explosive mixture, the Project Engineer
shall specify a more compatible material with
similar physical characteristics,

storage tanks shall be used for the major tanks
exceeding over 100'~0" in diameter and/or over 49-0" in
height unless otherwise specified in the job
specification. The foundation may also be used for the

FOUNDATIONS. FOR STORAGE TANKS
(2) Provide better distribution of the concentrated,
load of the shell to produce a more nearly uniform
soil loading under the tank.
(2) Provide a level and solid starting pla
construction of the shell.
(3) Provide a batter means for leveling the tank grade
and preserving its contour during construction.
(4) Retain the £111 under the tank bottom and prevent
loss of material from erosion.
(5) Acts to miniaize moisture under the tank.
Average unit soil loading under the wall shall be
designed approximately the same as under the confined
earth at the same depth in view of provided equal
settlement,
TE the subgrade is weak and inadequate to carry the load
of the filled tank without excessive settinent (6" or
more), improvement of the subgrade shall be performed
According the similar method of Para, 2.3.
Tank Shed Ring
(1) Top concrete ringwall shall be sacoth and level
within 41/8 inch in any 30 feet of the
circumference and within +1/4 inch in the total
circumference measured from the average elevation.KOWAIT NATIONAL PETROLEUM CO. (E.$.C.} ENG. STD 43A2"

(2) The minimum reinforcing in any cingwail be 0,002
times the cross-sectional area of the all vall and
be required for resisting lateral earth pressure.
Strength of concrete and reinforcing bar shall be
in accordance with Std. Spec. 43Al concrete
foundation.
(3) Corner chamfer shall be provided to outside and
inside of top of concrete ringwall. Detail shall.
be referred Eng. Std. 43B15.3.
Tank Floor Base
Tank floor base shall be performed the same as the
foundation without a concrete ringwall, Para. 2.6.
Berm Cover
(2) For “detail of berm construction, see Eng. Std.

(2) The berm cover shall ‘extend from the outer toe of
the slope to exterior surface of concrete ringwall
of the tank perimeter, The elevation of top berm
cover level shall be finished 2 inch below the base
of tank shell.
(3) For otber detail, refer Para, 2.7 of without «
concrete ringwall.
