Baroque - is characterized by exaggerated motion and clear detail used to produce

drama, exuberance, and grandeur in sculpture, painting, architecture, literature, dance,


and music.

chiaroscuro - This is an Italian term which literally means 'light-dark'

contrapposto - an Italian term meaning "set against," used to describe the twisted pose


resulting from parts of the body set in opposition to each other around a central axis.

foreshortening - method of rendering a specific object or figure in a picture in depth. The


artist records, in varying degrees, the distortion that is seen by the eye when an object
or figure is viewed at a distance or at an unusual angle.

genre painting - a style of painting depicting scenes from ordinary life, especially
domestic situations. Genre painting is associated particularly with 17th-century Dutch
and Flemish artists.

humanism - a Renaissance cultural movement which turned away from medieval


scholasticism and revived interest in ancient Greek and Roman thought.

linear perspective - a type of perspective used by artists in which the relative size,
shape, and position of objects are determined by drawn or imagined lines converging at
a point on the horizon.

Mannerism - refers to a style of painting and sculpture that emerged in Rome and
Florence between 1520 and 1580, during the late years of the High Renaissance.

Renaissance - is the painting, sculpture and decorative arts of the period of European
history, emerging as a distinct style in Italy in about 1400, in parallel with developments
which occurred in philosophy, literature, music, science and technology.

Rococo -  which originated in early 18th century Paris, is characterized by soft colors
and curvy lines, and depicts scenes of love, nature, amorous encounters, light-hearted
entertainment, and youth. 

still life - is a work of art depicting mostly inanimate subject matter, typically
commonplace objects which are either natural or man-made
