Introduction -

Information, meaning processed form of raw data, is something to be valued with your life in
today's world. A person possessing right kind of information and using it at the right time, can

surely work wonders. From the credit card numbers which we use for shopping, to the
confidential bank account details, everything is stored in the form of binary digits in computers.
With the help of information technology and increasingly reliable digital resources, our life has
become far easier.

What is Information Technology?

The term 'information technology' evolved in the 1970s and if we consider a medium or large
company providing goods or services, its information technology department will be responsible
for storing, protecting, processing, retrieving and transmitting the information. Information
Technology (IT) is a wide and varied sector, and is represented in some form in almost all the
industries. It is a blend of computers and communication technology where IT professionals
perform variety of duties, ranging from development and installation of applications to designing
complex computer networks and databases. The information technology industry consists of
computers, communication mediums, peripherals, electronics-related organizations, softwares
and services. Usage of information technology for the completion of tasks in any organization,
speeds up the processing and information mobility, and also improves the reliability and integrity
of information.

Components of Information Technology -

 Computers: Computers are very important in order to store and process data.
Depending on the size, cost and processing ability, computers are divided into four

categories. They are mainframes, supercomputer, minicomputers and microcomputers
(desktops or personal computers).
 Servers: A server is a combination of hardware and software, and is used to provide
services to the client computers. These services generally include storage and
retrieval of information. A standalone computer can also act as a server, provided it's
running on server operating system.
 Database Management Systems (DBMS): Database Management System is
basically a set of software programs which manages the storage and retrieval and
organizes the information in a computer. This information is in the form of a database
and is managed with the help of softwares.
 Networking: A computer network is a collection of computers and peripherals
connected to each other through different modes. These modes can be wired or
wireless. The network allows computers to communicate with each other (share
information and resources like printers, scanners, etc.).
 Network Security: Network security is one of the most important aspects of
information technology. It consists of all the provisions made in an underlying
computer network, in order to prevent unauthorized usage of information. It also
includes implementing the policies adopted by the government and the applicable
cyber laws. It is also helpful in providing protection from computer hacking at the
cyber boundaries of an organization.

History of IT Industry in India -

The initial stage of IT Industry in India began when in 1968, the Tata Consultancy Services was
established in Mumbai by the Tata Group. The first software export zone SEEPZ (Santacruz
Electronics Export Processing Zone) was set up in Mumbai in 1973. The National Informatics
Centre was established in March 1975. The inception of The Computer Maintenance Company
(CMC) followed in October 1976. Between 1977-1980 various Information Technology
companies like Tata Infotech, Patni Computer Systems and Wipro came into picture. The
'microchip revolution' of the 1980s had convinced both Indira Gandhi and her successor Rajiv
Gandhi that electronics and telecommunications were vital to India's growth and development.
MTNL underwent technological improvements. Between 1986-1987, the Indian government
embarked upon the creation of three wide-area computer networking schemes: INDONET
(intended to serve the IBM mainframes in India), NICNET (the network for India's National
Informatics Centre), and the academic research oriented Education and Research Network
(ERNET). Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL) introduced Gateway Electronic Mail Service
in 1991, the 64 kbit/s leased line service in 1992, and commercial Internet access on a visible
scale in 1992. After the economic reforms from 1991 onwards, development of IT Industry was
given priority by the government, hence it has become one of the major sectors in India today.

IT in India: Current Status -

The Indian Information Technology industry accounts for a 5.19% of the country's GDP and
export earnings as of 2009, while providing employment to a significant number of its tertiary
sector workforce. More than 2.3 million people are employed in the sector either directly or
indirectly, making it one of the biggest job creators in India and a mainstay of the national
economy. In March 2009, annual revenues from outsourcing operations in India amounted to
US$50 billion and this is expected to increase to US$225 billion by 2020. The most prominent
IT hub is IT capital Bangalore.

Importance of Information Technology in Business -

There are many businesses which are in need of the software packages for satisfying their
operational as well as functional needs. For fulfilling this requirement, these companies sign
deals with the software manufacturing companies. Information technology is useful in ensuring
the smooth functioning of all the departments in a company such as the human resource
department, finance department, manufacturing department and also in security related purposes.
With the help of information technology, the companies in the automobile manufacturing sector
are able to get rid of any sort of errors or mistakes in the proper functioning of the tools used for
designing and manufacturing purposes. Due to the development of the information technology
sector, the companies are being able to keep themselves aware of the changes in the global
markets.

The software applications and the hardware devices are known to be the main elements of the
use of information technology. The web browsers, the operating systems, ERP's and special
purpose applications are the softwares which are used in information technology. Information
technology plays an important role in easily solving the mathematical problems and also in the
project management system. Information technology has a great use in the automated production
of sensitive information, automated upgradation of the important business processes and the
automated streamlining of the various business processes. It has also played an important role in
the areas of communication and automated administration of entire systems.

Current Trends and Technology in Information Technology Sector –

 Cloud Computing. Cloud computing is a style of computing that characterizes a model
in which providers deliver a variety of IT-enabled capabilities to consumers. Cloud-based
services can be exploited in a variety of ways to develop an application or a solution.
Using cloud resources does not eliminate the costs of IT solutions, but does re-arrange
some and reduce others. In addition, consuming cloud services enterprises will
increasingly act as cloud providers and deliver application, information or business
process services to customers and business partners.

 Artificial Intelligence. The branch of computer science concerned with making


computers behave like humans.

 Games playing: programming computers to play games such as chess and


checkers.

 Expert systems : programming computers to make decisions in real-life


situations (for example, some expert systems help doctors diagnose diseases
based on symptoms)

 Natural language : programming computers to understand natural human


languages

 Neural networks : Systems that simulate intelligence by attempting to reproduce


the types of physical connections that occur in animal brains

 Robotics : programming computers to see and hear and react to other sensory
stimuli

 Advanced Analytics. Optimization and simulation is using analytical tools and models to
maximize business process and decision effectiveness by examining alternative outcomes

and scenarios, before, during and after process implementation and execution. This can
be viewed as a third step in supporting operational business decisions. Fixed rules and
prepared policies gave way to more informed decisions powered by the right information
delivered at the right time, whether through customer relationship management (CRM) or
enterprise resource planning (ERP) or other applications. The new step is to provide
simulation, prediction, optimization and other analytics, not simply information, to
empower even more decision flexibility at the time and place of every business process
action. The new step looks into the future, predicting what can or will happen.

 Client Computing. Virtualization is bringing new ways of packaging client computing


applications and capabilities. As a result, the choice of a particular PC hardware platform,
and eventually the OS platform, becomes less critical. Enterprises should proactively
build a five to eight year strategic client computing roadmap outlining an approach to
device standards, ownership and support; operating system and application selection,
deployment and update; and management and security plans to manage diversity.\

 IT for Green. IT can enable many green initiatives. The use of IT, particularly among
the white collar staff, can greatly enhance an enterprise’s green credentials. Common
green initiatives include the use of e-documents, reducing travel and tele-working. IT can
also provide the analytic tools that others in the enterprise may use to reduce energy
consumption in the transportation of goods or other carbon management activities.

 Reshaping the Data Centre. In the past, design principles for data centres were simple:
Figure out what you have, estimate growth for 15 to 20 years, then build to suit. Newly-
built data centres often opened with huge areas of white floor space, fully powered and
backed by a uninterruptible power supply (UPS), water-and air-cooled and mostly empty.
However, costs are actually lower if enterprises adopt a pod-based approach to data
centre construction and expansion. If 9,000 square feet is expected to be needed during
the life of a data centre, then design the site to support it, but only build what’s needed for

five to seven years. Cutting operating expenses, which are a nontrivial part of the overall
IT spend for most clients, frees up money to apply to other projects or investments either
in IT or in the business itself.

 Social Computing. Workers do not want two distinct environments to support their work
– one for their own work products (whether personal or group) and another for accessing
“external” information. Enterprises must focus both on use of social software and social
media in the enterprise and participation and integration with externally facing enterprise-
sponsored and public communities. Do not ignore the role of the social profile to bring
communities together.

 Security – Activity Monitoring. Traditionally, security has focused on putting up a


perimeter fence to keep others out, but it has evolved to monitoring activities and
identifying patterns that would have been missed before. Information security
professionals face the challenge of detecting malicious activity in a constant stream of
discrete events that are usually associated with an authorized user and are generated from
multiple network, system and application sources. At the same time, security departments
are facing increasing demands for ever-greater log analysis and reporting to support audit
requirements. A variety of complimentary (and sometimes overlapping) monitoring and
analysis tools help enterprises better detect and investigate suspicious activity – often
with real-time alerting or transaction intervention. By understanding the strengths and
weaknesses of these tools, enterprises can better understand how to use them to defend
the enterprise and meet audit requirements.

 Flash Memory. Flash memory is not new, but it is moving up to a new tier in the storage
echelon. Flash memory is a semiconductor memory device, familiar from its use in USB
memory sticks and digital camera cards. It is much faster than rotating disk, but
considerably more expensive, however this differential is shrinking. At the rate of price
declines, the technology will enjoy more than a 100 percent compound annual growth

rate during the new few years and become strategic in many IT areas including consumer
devices, entertainment equipment and other embedded IT systems. In addition, it offers a
new layer of the storage hierarchy in servers and client computers that has key
advantages including space, heat, performance and ruggedness.

 Virtualization for Availability. Virtualization has been on the list of top strategic
technologies in previous years. live migration for availability that have longer term
implications. Live migration is the movement of a running virtual machine (VM), while
its operating system and other software continue to execute as if they remained on the
original physical server. This takes place by replicating the state of physical memory
between the source and destination VMs, then, at some instant in time, one instruction
finishes execution on the source machine and the next instruction begins on the
destination machine.

However, if replication of memory continues indefinitely, but execution of instructions remains


on the source VM, and then the source VM fails the next instruction would now place on the
destination machine. If the destination VM were to fail, just pick a new destination to start the
indefinite migration, thus making very high availability possible. 

Mobile Applications. By year-end 2010, 1.2 billion people will carry handsets capable of rich,
mobile commerce providing a rich environment for the convergence of mobility and the Web.
There are already many thousands of applications for platforms such as the Apple iPhone, in
spite of the limited market and need for unique coding. It may take a newer version that is
designed to flexibly operate on both full PC and miniature systems, but if the operating system
interface and processor architecture were identical, that enabling factor would create a huge turn
upwards in mobile application availability.

Government Acts and Policies -

The main acts and policies are,

A) IT Act 2000 -

The arrival of the Internet and the World Wide Web made it possible for people to communicate
and transact over cyber space. It was a revolutionary step for humanity, but it also created a
significant need for the regulation and governance of these activities, a requirement that lead to
the creation and implementation of cyber laws across the globe. India became the 12th nation in
the world to adopt a cyber law during 2000.

 From the perspective of e-commerce in India, the IT Act 2000 and its provisions contain
many positive aspects. Firstly, the implications of these provisions for the e-businesses
would be that email would now be a valid and legal form of communication in our
country that can be duly produced and approved in a court of law.
 Companies shall now be able to carry out electronic commerce using the legal
infrastructure provided by the Act.
 Digital signatures have been given legal validity and sanction in the Act.
 The Act throws open the doors for the entry of corporate companies in the business of
being Certifying Authorities for issuing Digital Signatures Certificates.
 The Act now allows Government to issue notification on the web thus heralding e-
governance.
 The Act enables the companies to file any form, application or any other document with
any office, authority, body or agency owned or controlled by the appropriate Government
in electronic form by means of such electronic form as may be prescribed by the
appropriate Government.
 The IT Act also addresses the important issues of security, which are so critical to the
success of electronic transactions. The Act has given a legal definition to the concept of
secure digital signatures that would be required to have been passed through a system of
a security procedure, as stipulated by the Government at a later date.

 Under the IT Act, 2000, it shall now be possible for corporates to have a statutory remedy
in case if anyone breaks into their computer systems or network and causes damages or
copies data. The remedy provided by the Act is in the form of monetary damages, not
exceeding Rs. 1 crore.

The major numbers of company’s clients are located in U.S and recent Economic
slowdown in US affected their business terribly. Recent Recession in Global Market is
the best example how the economy especially IT sector is dependent on U.S Economy.

 Centers Concentration at one place only.


A significant number of the development centers are concentrated in pune city in India,
which somewhere stops the reach of the company to worldwide market.

 Increase in attrition rate.


The company has faced a marginal hike in the attrition rate. The attrition rate for the FY
2009-10 was 13.65 percent as against 13.54 percent a year before.

Opportunities:
 Huge untapped potential in the global market as IT will become the need of almost
every industry.
 Present client base can be expanded by providing more specialized services.
Threats:
 Competition for Employees retains.
The company faces competition for employees in the market. The company success
depends in large part upon the highly skilled software professionals and the ability to
attract and retain these personnel.

 Risks on exchange rate movements.


Risks arise from exchange rate movements, as there is continuous ups and downs in
financial sector, so there is always a chance of collapse or damage to market.

 Withdrawal of Tax Benefits.

The company’s net income would decrease if the Government of India reduces or
withdraws tax benefits and other incentives it currently provides, or otherwise increases
the effective tax rate.

Pesistent is currently operating in 20 cities and 3 continents Europe, America and Asia. In India,
Persistent operates from Pune and houses teams of development engineers in three facilities,
named Bhageerath, Pingala-Aryabhata and Hinjewadi, which are within a few miles of one

Corporate Social Responsibilities at Persistent

As a part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility, Persistent Systems has been
donating to institutions, working primarily in the field of Health and Education since the
financial year 1995-96. The Company earmarks 1% of the Consolidated Net Profit of the
previous financial year for the purpose of donation in the subsequent financial year. To develop a
systematic approach to administer the process of grant of donations, the Company formed a
public charitable trust “Persistent Foundation” in 2008-09. It is primarily involved in three key
areas of Healthcare, Education and Community Development.

Healthcare - In the Healthcare area, the Foundation aims to establish or grant aid to hospitals,
welfare centers and establish or grant aid to institutions for physically handicapped or mentally
retarded persons. The key events undertaken this year were as follows.

1) Sponsorship to children - The Foundation has provided sponsorship to 50 physically


and mentally challenged children at Goa and Hyderabad with the help of two NGOs,
Lakshadweep and JCI Vasco.
2) Health check-up of poor students - Free clinical health check-up camps were conducted
for poor students in Goa and Pune. About 2629 students (1152 from Pune and 1477 from
Goa) were provided with free consultation and medicines.
3) Blood donation – Blood Donation camps were conducted at Pune, Nagpur, Hyderabad
and Goa in which a total of 1125 bottles of blood were donated to hospitals.
4) Translation Service for Cancer Center at Pune - The Foundation helped Prashanti
Cancer Care Mission, Pune to translate their ‘Patient Information Kit’ from English to
local languages like Hindi, Gujarati. This helped the Mission to reach a larger population
and make them aware of the gravity of the disease.

Education - In education area, the Foundation aims to establish, support and grant financial
assistance to schools, colleges, libraries, laboratories, and other institutions for the use or benefit
of the students and run studentships and scholarships. The main events were,

1) Computer Education Program – The Foundation organized MSCIT computer training


program where 50 teachers from 9 schools in Nagpur were provided training in Basic
Computer Education Domain. This was done in association with Ascent Technologies
and Vanita Vikas Vidhyalaya.
2) Computer Education for slum area students – It helped the 10th standard students of
Nutan Balvikas Mandir in covering their syllabus related to Internet and Email by
providing them the company’s infrastructure, training facilities and employees as
trainers.
3) Student Sponsorship - As part of Community Aid and Sponsorship Program, students
from financially backward groups were helped by sponsoring their basic needs like
education material, accessories, food for nutrition, personality development. Total 251
students were sponsored by 257 company employees.
4) School Uniform Donation – The Foundation conducted Uniform Donation Drive for
needy students of Hutatma Rajguru High School Pune. Around 235 students were chosen
on the basis of their financial position and school performance.
5) PATHSHALA Initiative at Nagpur – With an objective of providing personalized
coaching, the PATHSHALA initiative was launched in 2009-10 for conducting English
and Maths classes for 10th standard students. About 76 students of Vanita Vikas School
Nagpur have benefitted from this initiative.

Community Development - On Community Development front, the Foundation aims to
establish, maintain or grant aid to aged homes, orphanages for relief and help to needy and
destitute people, grant aid to institutions which undertake welfare and rehabilitative activities for
addicts, grant medical, monetary or other relief to needy victims, during natural calamities. It
undertakes plantation of trees and projects of rural developments, village improvements in all
possible manner. The main events undertaken this year were,

1) Green Social Initiative – The foundation distributed around 10,000 saplings across 29
primary and higher secondary schools in Pune as part of the Green Social Initiative in
December 2009 and January 2010. It worked with Nirmalya Trust which runs a nursery
to create employment for physically handicapped children for this initiative.
2) Tree Plantation Drive – In Nagpur, a tree plantation drive was organized at Vanita
Vikas School, where 80 saplings were distributed to top 10 students of 10th standard
classes. In Goa, ‘VanaMahotsava’ was organized where Persistent employees
participated in tree plantation.

The Foundation spent about  39 lakh on CSR during financial year 2009-10 which are
