Financial Return
Imaginations
When CSF was incorporated by caring parents and community members
in 1982, the annual return to the schools was a few thousand dollars, GOAL
very important to the Coronado Unified classrooms. As depicted in the $1,000,000 2019-20
thermometer, increases over the years have been spurred by increased
parent and community engagement, efficient event planning, fundraising,
and administration oversight.

Since the 1990s, the CSF Board deposited 10% of the annual net income $830,000 2016-17
into an endowment fund which grew to nearly $1,000,000 in 2010 when the
Frances G. Harpst legacy gift of $3,800,000 was received. This life-changing $752,616 2013-14
gift for our public schools has now grown to $6,250,000 returning $310,000
to our schools for this school year.

A gift of $25,000 provides a 4% return or $1,000 annually while a $250,000
donation provides $10,000 in perpetual funding. The endowment is managed by
the CSF Finance Committee with both Board and community members providing
financial stewardship. With Coronado Unified funded 36th out of 42 school
districts in Southern California, the need for ongoing perpetual funding is crucial
to maintain academic excellence and provide programs that fuel imaginations.

Efficient Stewardship of Donor Funds
CSF Board of Directors and staff require efficient operations to maximize the return of donor funds back to the
classrooms of Coronado Unified. Board Chair Jim Grady, in his 7th year on the Board, and Vice Chair Renee
Cavanaugh, who also teaches 5th grade at Silver Strand, provide leadership for the 18 member Board of Directors.
Patty Cowan is starting her 13th year with the Foundation and leads the small professional staff of four full-time
employees and a part-time staff accountant.

These charts reflect the 2016-17 audited financials which can be found on our website at csfkids.org/annual-report.

CONCERT IN THE PARK
Coronado Schools Foundation began partnering with a local business to
underwrite a concert in the Coronado Promenade Concerts series in 2006.
This “friend-raiser” provides outreach into the greater community for both CSF
Board of Directors and staff.

Park Life Real Estate owners Renee Wilson & Scott Grimes again stepped up
this year to underwrite the live band performance and show their support for our
local public schools for the August 28th concert. Started 47 years ago as a time
for families and friends to gather in Spreckels Park, this time-honored tradition
continues for all to enjoy.

Heather Frank and Jennifer Johnstad co-chaired the

annual event possible.

Team Tote students from Coronado Middle School hold up a tally for the 29th annual Telethon

$209,000 raised on March 9th which raised a total of $209,000 for our local public schools. Student
hosts from all four campuses (pictured on the cover) co-hosted and partnered with principals
and Superintendent Karl Mueller, to raise record funding for Coronado Unified. The 2017
Total Telethon marked the sixth year that this live TV event, aired over the Internet for deployed
parents and family members across the country to watch, was entirely produced by students

Raised under the direction of Producer Tony Perri. Students from both CMS and CHS came together
to produce the show with hundreds of students performing and over 150 volunteers assisting at
the Coronado High School Performing Arts Center and Quad.

River Of Giving Mosaic

If you’re on the campus at Coronado High School, stop by the River
of Giving mosaic, on the steps of the 400 building. Designed by
the CHS Art Department staff and students as a project-based
learning opportunity, it was unveiled in 2011 as a donor recognition
wall. Individuals and business donors giving $5,000 or $10,000
respectively are honored with a commemorative tile on the River of
Giving. CSF will again be adding new donor names with the assistance
of the CHS Art Department in the 2018-19 school year.

Creating a Lasting Legacy

PLANNED GIVING HONOR SOCIETY
Coronado Schools Foundation established a Planned Giving Honor Society in 1996 to encourage and recognize those individuals
who wish to provide a lasting gift to the students of Coronado’s public schools through a bequest in their will or trust. Leaving this
legacy of support will ensure that Coronado Unified students continue to have access to the tools they need well into the future.
Gifts may be made anonymously and all donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law.
