Based on the video, define what is scalar and vector quantities.

Exploration

Activity: Find your treasure!

Prepare two envelopes, envelope A and B.

Envelope A

1. From where the teacher stands, walk 5 m.

2. Then walk 3 m.

3. Then walk a further 5 m.

4. Walk another 8 m.

5. Finally walk 9 m.

6. Enjoy the treasure!

Envelope B

1. From where the teacher stands, walk 5 m due west.

2. Then walk 3 m due south.

3. Then walk a further 5 m due west.

4. Walk another 8 m due south.

5. Finally walk 9 m due east.

6. Enjoy the treasure!

Students will choose to open either envelope A or B. Once they open the envelope, they will
need to follow the instruction. Teacher needs to put sweets or chocolates at the specific place
based on the instruction in envelope B.

Did they find the treasure? Only students that open the envelope B will find the treasure.

Apparatus : Measuring tape, compasses

Which envelope (A or B) manage to find the treasure? Why? Because envelope B has
both the magnitude and the direction.

Explanation

The envelope that contains magnitude together with the direction will ensure your group to
reach the treasure. These are the difference between scalar and vector quantities. Diagram
below shows another example of scalar and vector quantities.

19
Can you differentiate between scalar and vector quantities?

Do some research on other examples of scalar and vector quantities. List down the scalar and
vector quantities in the blank spaces below.

Scalar quantities Vector quantities

Distance Displacement

area velocity

volume acceleration

speed momentum

mass force

Evaluation

You have to answer all the questions below.

1. Diagram below shows the journey of Aathif travelling from Cameron Highlands to Kuala

Lumpur, a distance of 205 km. After reaching his destination, he continued his journey to

Seremban, a distance of 63 km.

20
From Seremban, Aathif then travelled back to Cameron Highlands, a distance of 268 km.

a) Sketch Aathif’s whole journey.

b) What is the total distance travelled by Aathif?

Total distance travelled = 205 + 63 + 268

= 536 km

c) What was his final displacement?

0 km
