Current Issues
Common ACUPS Issues with
Broadband Service Operators
• Fully enclosed site condition inside building with high
ambient operating temperature – Extremely environmental
challenged to any ACUPS

• Extremely high UPS failure rate – Inappropriate product

design technology for the Application (need Outdoor Rated)

• Battery not giving the backup time or failed prematurely

– Improper battery technology for the Uncontrolled environment

• High Maintenance or replacement Cost - Demands on

service and support team and Customers satisfaction affected

• Poor Overall System Reliability that needs to be

improved – Frequent servicing or replacing failure UPS system will
incur high operating cost as well as creating downtime to affect
customer satisfaction

Problems and Solution
The Problems
• ON-Line UPS is not suitable for the Uncontrolled
Environment – Line Interactive is performing better in the harsh
environment. It has a Higher efficiency and a lower heat generated.

• Normal ACUPS cannot withstand the stress as

appears in the current installed site’s extreme condition
– Need an industrial grade ACUPS that will work perfectly in an operating
temperature at or above +50°C

• Battery easily overcharged due to charger does not

have temperature Compensation – Temperature compensated
charger is a must for uncontrolled environment

• AGM battery in use in a higher string voltage DC bus is

subject to problem when operated in a high ambient
operating temperature environment – AGM battery is only
designed to work in an controlled environment
NOVUS FXM is the Prefect
Solution to the Problems
• Alpha Novus FXM Series is an industrial designed
Outdoor ACUPS – it has an operating temperature of -40° to +74°C
• Line Interactive Design Technology – Novus FXM has a
much Higher efficiency and lower heat generated.

• Temperature Compensated Charger – Novus FXM has a

10A temperature compensated charger quick enough to recharge a
totally depleted battery to 100% in 10 hours

• 48V DC Charger and Inverter – Novus FXM has a 48V DC bus

design (4 x 12V battery) to minimize potential problem developed with
larger battery string

• Battery with Gel technology – 220GXL Gel battery with 109Ah is

designed to work in the high ambient operating temperature environment

Novus Outdoor ACUPS Features Summary
Conformal Coating
• All Novus ACUPS circuit boards are conformal coated to operate more reliably in the
outdoor or uncontrolled environment

Large 10A Temperature Compensated battery charger

• All Novus ACUPS has a temperature compensated 10A charger which can recharge the
battery back to a fully charged condition much quicker after a prolonged outage

Design and manufacture to meet CSA and UL standard

• All Novus ACUPS are meeting the most stringent CSA and UL standard for safety (needs
extra strong design and manufacturing to meet this standard)

Large AC Input voltage windows (150 – 328V)

• Can operate in line mode within the voltage windows to reduce duty cycle of the UPS
operation thereby reducing wear and tear or degradation of the Inverter and Battery
Novus Outdoor ACUPS Features Summary
Extreme Operating Environment
• A wide operating temperature range of -40 to 74ºC for the most extreme operating
environments

Communications Capability
• External communications via RS-232 port or (optional) SNMP interface provides local or
remote monitoring and control with Windows based software

Controls and Programmability

• Six independently programmable and report relays allow tracking and/or controlling of
key functions

Generator Compatibility
• Works with Alpha DC Generator for extended backup. Alpha DC Generator runs off
Natural gas or LPG
More Comments on The
On-Line UPS System
Installed Site Conditions
• Most ACUPS installed sites are small and fully enclosed area with no air conditioning nor
ventilation with average running at above 35ºC even the outside ambient temperature is
around 25ºC

• Additional 255Watt heat load is generated by On-Line UPS to have further increased the
ambient temperature of the room

Why On-Line UPS is failing

• Double conversion technology UPS are generally running hotter and failure can be
compounded by improper enclosure designed

• Despite cooling fan on top of enclosure but heat flow can be blocked due to the large depth
of the rack mount On-Line UPS

• System degradation is accelerated for Indoor designed UPS while working at above 40ºC

• Charger is not designed to charge large rating (70Ah) battery

More Benefits of the Proposed Alpha
System

Site Temperature will be much less hotter

• Alpha FXM will run efficiently in Line Interactive Mode with much lesser heat generated by
the UPS (only 34Watt) as compared with the On-Line UPS

• More temperature improvement can be achieved via the remote battery temperature sensor
of the FXM and one of its dry contact to control an enclosure fan to improve the airflow
increasing the reliability of the UPS and the batteries

More on Novus FXM

• Alpha Novus FXM ACUPS was approved by the California department of Transportation
(Caltrans) to the 74 deg Celsius specification

• Alpha Novus FXM ACUPS are installed in the worldwide market for Telecom, security,
Traffic and Industrial Outdoor applications

Alpha Gel Battery
Battery for Outdoor Application

• Design life of most battery is around six to ten years – based on 25°C
• High temperatures shorten battery life when used in Outdoor
uncontrolled environment – each 10°C rise will reduce battery life in half
• Valve-regulated, gelled-electrolyte are the safest, most cost-effective
battery type for Outdoor applications
• Alpha Premium Gel Battery is the Industrial proven GEL battery to last
the longest life despite working in high temperature environment
• A practical life expectancy of 5 – 8 years are obtainable in high
temperature environment (as compared to most AGM battery with much
lesser life) when use in Alpha UPS solution with Temperature
Compensated Charging technique
Temperature vs. Battery Life

• Each 10C rise ==> 50 % loss in battery life

Life Expectancy of Alpha Gel Battery
AlphaCell Testing Summary
• Above is ALT data on our 220GXL performed at JBI labs in Ohio.
• Each period is 28 days on 13.65VDC float @ 60C.
• This test is to simulate life in a non temperature controlled outdoor
environment which is hotter than a lot of extreme ACUPS installed site
condition.
• The discharges are done at 25AMP constant current which is much less
than the current load.
• By calculations at the load as described we will barely reach 2 hours of
runtime out of the box and as the battery looses capacity it will fall below 2
hours.
• Our Warranty will be within 2 years the battery run time will not be less
then 70% of the out-of-box run time
