Anchorage Point – OSHA 1910

▪ Typical “anchorage / anchor points” include:

• Large Columns • Large Beams • Concrete • Roof Panel /
Understructure

• Friction / Weight • Free-Standing

Systems Engineered
Structures
▪ OSHA Anchorage Requirements:
• Option A: 5,000 lbs. (22.2 kN)
• Option B: Safety Factor of 2 per a Q.P. (2x1800 Lbs)
▪ Notes: 4

• M.A.F. = Maximum Arrest Force

✓ 2,700 lbs + = Internal Injuries
• Multiply by # of workers attached

Standard Approval is ANSI Z359.1 with minimum strength 22kN.
Type:
Webbing base Webbing base Wire base
No D-Ring with D-Ring

5
The different is only the application and work nature such as
• If you need light and very flexible due to high movement, you can use webbing
base no D-Ring
• If you need work on sharp edge/ object, you ca use webbing base with web
protector or wire base

21

▪ Lifeline system diperbolehkan hanya memiliki satu bentangan tunggal maksimal 30 meter
(PERMENAKER NO 9 Tahun 2016)
safety factor 2.

BEAM Structure
23

Work method roof installation (general recommendation):

- Worker set up scaffold to access to the roof structure
- Worker install temporary lifeline system with rope access technique or using ABC fall protection element
- Installing roof start from the line 2 from both side of building (this because the end beam structure in each side will used as anchor
point)

This is just general recommendation, actual condition will affecting to the method of work. Ensure you have qualified person in Fall
Protection who have authority in design and install temporary lifeline

Traditional Load Control

▪ Load control is the key consideration.

▪ Welded/Bolted Traditionally Posts

Problems:
• Expensive (installation + anchor cost)
• Location of posts restricted to where
steels run
• Thermal bridging
• Water leakage problems
• Loss of roof warranty

▪ Constant Force Post:

• Addresses all these Problems.
• Make the anchor “top fix”
• Have the anchor absorb the energy,
not the roof.

Constant Force Systems
(Invented in year 2001)
The recent introduction of
constant force systems
massively reduces the load on
the fixings/structure

Load is absorbed by the system

not - the roof or energy
absorbers in the cable.

• Representative roof testing
• Roofing manufacturer approval
• Multi and omni-directional testing
• Number of users
• EN 365 product marking

Overhead Systems
▪ System design:
• Single span – Maximum 60m length without the
need for intermediates
• Multi span – When system length is more than
60m, we recommend the use of intermediates
(10m spans)
• MSA can assist with bespoke design solutions for
your specific needs
▪ System Applications:
• Maintenance Workshops: Train, Truck, Aviation
Hangers, ISO truck inspectio
• Gantries and Gantry Cranes 53

• Industrial: Loading unloading area, Line machine

maintenance
▪ Materials:
• High Grade 316 Marine Grade Stainless allows for
15 – 20 years lifespan in corrosive environments
(allowing for different environmental conditions)

Overhead System
- Single Span
1. Constant Force technology energy
absorber
• Located at one end of system, energy
absorber ensures that maximum load
transferred to structure in event of a fall
does not exceed 18 kN.
2. Overhead system mobile anchorage
• Connects user via SRL (self retracting
lifeline) to overhead fall protection cable.
3. Intermediate brackets
• Support cable on multi-span systems
and also accommodate change in
55
direction.
4. Line tensioning device
• Allows system to be correctly tensioned
for use. Indicator disc will spin freely
when correct tension is reached at 5 kN.

Overhead System
- Multi-Span
1. Constant Force technology energy
absorber
▪ Located at one end of system, the
energy absorber ensures that maximum
load transferred to structure in event of a
fall does not exceed 18 kN.
2. Overhead system mobile anchorage
▪ Connects user via SRL (self retracting
lifeline) to overhead fall protection cable.
3. Intermediate brackets
▪ Required on systems longer than 60m to
support the cable on multi-span systems
56
and also accommodate changes in
direction.
4. Line tensioning device
▪ Allows system to be correctly tensioned
for use. Indicator disc will spin freely

Issue

60

Improvement
Before After

mengurangi fall clearance

Ladder Regulations

▪ Where are temporary ladder regulations found?

• 1910 – Subpart D
• 1926 – Subpart X
▪ Fall protection required?

• Since both of these are regulations of their

own, separate from those for fall protection,
OSHA does not require a PFAS. 66

• That said, the recommendation would be to

use one whenever possible.

Fixed Ladders

▪ OSHA requires F.P. on fixed ladders at the following heights:

• 24’ – Subpart D
• 24’ – Construction
▪ Options for protection include:
Poor: Cage / Well
Better: SRL
Best: Vertical Lifeline (VLL)
▪ VLL Components: 70

OSHA 1910.28

Fixed Ladders – 1910.28(b)(9): The new rule phases out a 1993

exception for the outdoor advertising industry that used to allow
“qualified climbers” to forego fall protection. 1910.28(b)(10) Additionally,
fall protection must be installed/used on all fixed ladders over 24ft
according to the timetable below.
▪ Existing installations (before November 19, 2018) must have a PFAS,
ladder safety system, cage, or well.
▪ New installations (after November 19, 2018) must have a PFAS or
ladder safety system. Cages and wells will no longer be acceptable.
▪ Fixed ladder, cage, or well replacements or any sections thereof must 72

have PFAS or a ladder safety system installed at least on the

replaced section.
▪ Final deadline – after November 18, 2036 all fixed ladders must be
equipped with a PFAS or ladder safety system.
