Vector Addition Practice

1. A plane heads east at 62 m/s through an 11 m/s cross wind blowing the plane south. Find the magnitude
and direction of the plane’s resultant velocity.

2. A spelunker (person who explores caves) determines that the cave entrance is located 349 m, 253° from
her current position. How far south and how far west from her current position is the cave entrance?

3. If a child pulls a sled through the snow with a force of 50 N exerted at an angle of 38o above the
horizontal, find the horizontal and vertical components of the force

4. During the Vector Addition lab, Mac and Tosh start at the classroom door and walk 40.0 m, north, 32.5 m
east, 15.5 m south, 68.5 m west, and 2.5 m, north. Determine the magnitude and direction of the resultant
displacement of Mac and Tosh.
5. A girl delivering newspapers covers her route by traveling 3.00 blocks west, 4.00 blocks north, and then
6.00 blocks east.
a. What is her total displacement?

b. What is the total distance she travels?

6. A hiker starts at their camp and moves the following distances while exploring their surroundings: 75 m
north, 250 m east, 125 m at an angle of 165°, and 150 m south. Find their resultant displacement from
camp.
7. A jet airliner, moving initially at 300 mph to the east, suddenly enters a region where the wind is blowing
at 100 mph at 150°. What is the new speed and direction of the aircraft?

8. A man pushing a mop across the floor causes it to undergo two displacements. The first has a magnitude
of 150 cm and makes an angle of 120°. The second has a magnitude of 140 cm and makes an angle of 35°.
Find the magnitude and direction of the resultant displacement.
9. A map suggests that Atlanta is 730 miles in a direction of 5.00° north of
east from Dallas. The same map shows that Chicago is 560 miles in a
direction of 21.0° west of north from Atlanta. Figure P3.18 shows the
locations of these three cities. Modeling the Earth as flat, use this
information to find the displacement from Dallas to Chicago.

10. A commuter airplane starts from the airport and takes the route
shown in Figure P3.19. The plane first flies to city A located 175
km away in a direction 30.0° north of east. Next, it flies for 150
km 20.0° west of north, to city B. Finally, the plane flies 190 km
due west, to city C. Find the location of city C relative to the
starting point.
