Dear Selection Committee,

My name is Krista Lang. I have served as an English teacher for the past 15 years, my last three at
Boone High School, and have had the privilege to serve as Catherine McCarthy’s teacher during her
sophomore year. Based on her academic performance, heightened creativity, and incredible moral
compass, I believe Catherine would be a sublime candidate for the Florida Student Journalist of the
Year.

While she has been a student at Boone High School, Catherine has challenged herself academically,
taking a plethora of AP-level courses and college-level courses, like English Comp 1. Currently, she is a
member of the National Honor Society. Moreover, her Editor-in-Chief position for the school
yearbook allows her to showcase her exceptional written and verbal skills that have far surpassed any
student of her age and maturity.

While academics are of superior importance to Catherine, she is incredibly active in building a strong
community, in and outside of school. In school, Catherine has been an active member of both the
Journalism program and the Yearbook all four years of high school. During her sophomore year,
Catherine started Crafty Crew, a craft club for students looking to learn how to craft and build
relationships with like-minded students, and has maintained her Presidency since. Her ability to
organize and lead people with a firm kindness has made these organizations some of the most
desirable clubs to join on campus. Outside of school, Catherine can be seen taking pictures for a variety
of events for the yearbook, running her personal photography business, creating a custom piece of art,
or volunteering for one of the many events around Orlando.

I am confident that Catherine’s ability to excel academically, to think creatively, to execute with
precision, and to build a strong sense of community from her kind, service heart makes her a strong
