MAJOR PROJECT: SKMM3523 COMPONENT DESIGN
SESSION 2019/2020 SEMESTER 1

A drum mixing system (as indicated in Figure 1.1) needs to be designed to blend liquid resin
for plastic blending factory. The specifications are as shown in the diagram. You are required
to use V-Belt system and Gear System.

Basic Requirement:
i. Drum rotating at 30 rpm CW.
ii. Stirrer turning at 60 rpm CCW.
iii. Stirrer arm translating up and down at
30 mm per minute.
iv. Powered by Motor 600 rpm and 1/3 hp.

i. Sketch the system from input to output in A3 paper.

ii. Draw the free-body diagram for all components in A3 paper.

MAJOR PROJECT

i. Select the suitable motor from those that are available in the market
ii. Analyse all the shafts in the system.
iii. Analyse all the gears in the system.
iv. Select the suitable v-belt for the system.
v. Select the suitable bearings for the system.
vi. Put all answers in one table.

The report must be submitted using the following guidelines

- Final sizing, output of the design: achieved or not, if not why?
3.0 Engineering Analysis
- state only the assumption
- state the relationship between component during the engineering analysis
- the final sizing from the calculation
- no detail analysis should be here.

5.0 Appendix
- Drawing
- Detail engineering analysis
- Sample computational calculation with sample for verification purposes
