SUBJECT: Earthquake in Quezon Avenue, Digos City on October
16, 2019
This pertains to the earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 that
happened last October 16, 2019 at around 7:30 in the evening which affected the Digos Arcade Building. I was already out of the store when the terrifying earthquake shook Digos. After a few minutes when the earthquake came to a halt, I hurriedly went to the store to check for the status of the building and employees. When I passed by at the Digos Arcade edifice, I immediately saw that the columns already have cracks and the glass panels of our BPI tenant were shattered. There were also customers who got bruises and were wounded as the glass doors were apparently broken. I promptly reported this incident to the management right there and then. Unfortunately, since it was very dark due to the electricity being cut off pursuant to the incident that happened and we were told by the authorities not to go back inside the store considering that there were continued aftershocks occurring, we were not able to inspect the entire building for other damages that night. We then ensured to secure the area by trying to close the roll ups for both the main and back entrances and by deploying at least eight (8) guards to watch over the edifice until the next morning.
Early morning the next day on October 17, 2019, we proceeded
to immediately conduct a clearing inspection with the security and maintenance personnel. In the process, we found out that the ceilings were fragmented and detached from its frame, the interior wall and floor as well as the columns all had visible cracks. On the same day, the damage caused by the earthquake was assessed by the local government as well as the company’s Engineering team and contractors. All of the damages described above can be seen and referred to in the pictures submitted.
