 SLO: Sort 3-D objects and 2-D shapes, using one attribute, and explain
the sorting rule.
Students will discuss using math vocabulary.
Learning Objectives Students will listen to ways shapes can be sorted.
Students will engage in an activity to help them learn sorting rules.

students are sorting.
Summative Assessment No summative assessment is directly linked to this lesson.

Learning Experience
Timing Content/Description Differentiations
10 minutes Math Talk
 Teacher will review the purpose and
expectations of a math talk
 Teacher will display an image (WODB task) and
give students time to think about it and come
up with an answer
 Once all students have signalled that they have
an answer, the teacher will start calling on
students to explain their answer
 Students will share their answers and the
teacher will explain that every student is
correct
5 minutes Movement Break

students
2 minutes Sorting Review
 Teacher will review what a sorting rule is with
students
2 minutes Manipulatives Sorting - Group
 Teacher will hand out bags of 3-D objects to
students (pre-prepared)
 Teacher will give students one sorting rule to do
all together (all students do it with their blocks)
18 minutes Manipulatives Sorting – Individual
 Teacher will give each student a worksheet to
sort their blocks on that will assist them in
creating their own sorting rule
 Students will think of their own sorting rule and
sort their blocks according to that rule
 Students will fill in their worksheet (cutting and
pasting shapes) after figuring out their rule with
their shapes
 Teacher will collect student worksheets to
check for understanding
4 minutes Movement Break
 Teacher will review the number of edges,
vertices, and faces of 3-D shapes with exercises
for students
15 minutes Math Facts
 Teacher will hand out for each student a math
facts sheet for them to practice their addition
and subtraction facts
 When a student completes it, they will ask for
the teacher to check it
