language acquisition device = the knowledge contained in LAD is the UG. This
device allows kids to acquire knowledge within a few years after birth. Included
in this innate knowledge must be details of important characteristics of all the
world’s languages. (This opposes tabula rasa).

universal grammar = The basic design underlying the grammars of all human
languages; also refers to the circuitry in children’s brains that allows them to
learn the grammar oftheir parents’ language

Transformational Generative Grammar = implies a set of rules that can be

applied to generate sentences at the same time capable of producing infinite
number of strings of sentences from the set rules.

Generative syntax = this represents the order of words in a sentence in

hierarchical syntax trees that show what structures are possible. Based on this
tree, we can suggest a grammar rule that adverb must occur in verb phrases.

Principles and Parameters hypothesis = all languages shared certain

grammatical principles but could vary in parameters, or the application of these
principles. For example, a principle is “every sentence must have a subject” but
the parameter of whether the subject must be explicitly stated could vary
between language. This however didn’t answer which grammatical rule is
universal.

Recursion – one shared principle of all languages. This means that structures
can be nested inside each other. In other words, a sentence embeds a noun
phrase in a noun phrase or a structure in a structure. This is obvious when
constructing complex sentence structures or a simple sentence with numerous
phrases.
