LUMEN – Data science competition

About the competition

An educational competition within the LUMEN platform, the goal of which is for students to hone their
knowledge related to analytical thinking, prediction, computer science and mathematics on a specific
task. Data science is the successor of the well-known Mozgalo, the only student competition of its kind
in the Republic of Croatia.

Through their solutions, students find useful knowledge and information from large amounts of
structured or unstructured data using various statistical methods and techniques of machine learning
and artificial intelligence. The goal of Data science is to encourage students to think analytically, predict
and independently develop creative solutions to real problems with the help of computer science,
statistics, econometrics and mathematics. Students develop their communication and business skills,
teamwork and connect with numerous companies.

During the competition, educational lectures and workshops are held, and participants are provided
with mentoring and educational content.

Teams consist of a minimum of 2 to a maximum of 4 members. All full-time and part-time students of
any year of undergraduate and graduate study from all Croatian universities and other higher education
institutions in Croatia can apply.

How do the competitions in these areas differ?

LUMEN Development - the largest student competition in the development of web and mobile
applications in Croatia and the region (successor to the App Start Contest)

LUMEN Engineering - a unique educational competition in the development of practical solutions to

given topics in the field of electrical engineering (successor of Elektroboj)

LUMEN Bussines - leading and one of the longest-running competitions in solving business cases from
various areas in Croatia and the region (successor of Case Study Competition)
 LUMEN Data science - competition in in-depth analysis of large amounts of data, machine learning and
artificial intelligence (successor to the Brain)

As part of the opening of the LUMEN platform, for each area you will be able to attend a panel
discussion, where you will hear representatives of companies that are partners in this year's competition
and learn more about current topics first hand. In order for them to hear you too, we have provided a
