language. Prior to Roman colonization the island was populated only by the Celts who spoke Gaelic.
In the S® century AD two German tribes, the Angles and the Saxons, moved { the area now called
England and established German as the main language.
In the 6® century, Pope Gregory the Great sent Saint August
in was the language of the church it became the main language in England again,
from Norway invaded England and established Norse (Old Norwegi
the main language until the English fought back and assimilated the Vikings and their language.
In 1066 AD the French Normans invaded England and ruled for about 300 years establishing French as
the main language until England finally won its independence.
Only in the 1500"s with William Shakespeare do we start to see a modern English language which would be
understandable to us to
Old German, Old Norwegian, and Old French.
English words are not always pronounced the way they are spelled because of the 300 years of French
influence which changed much of the pronunciation. Unfortunately the spelling was never updated.
