Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. Routinary Activities

Good morning, class! Good morning, Ma’am.

Okay, let us pray. Let us bow our head and feel the presence of
God...

Before you take your seats, please pick up (arrange chairs and pick up pieces of paper)
any pieces of paper or trashes. Then, please
arrange your chair properly.
You may now take your seats. (take seats)

Class, may I know who is absent today? No one, Ma’am

Very good! It’s nice to know that you all (clap hands)
present.

Now, we will have another interesting topic Yes Ma’am

for today. I will introduce to you the word
Algebra. Are you ready to listen?

B. Presentation
Motivation
(The teacher starts questions on the
whiteboard)
ex. 5 + = 12, we all know that the
answer is 7. Another one
8- = 5, the answer is 3. But what if?
2( ) + 4(12- )+ = 1, aside from
you will see many boxes you will also
have a hard time solving the problem
and you will be confused about your
answer.
That’s why we need to learn Algebra
to answer complicated Math problems.

C. Discussion
(Present the PowerPoint)
 Discuss the origin of algebra
Al-jabr – an Arabic word for Algebra
which means restoration.

Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi –

Arab Mathematician who introduce
Algebra, which in turn was part of the
title of the mathematical book written
around 820 AD.

Ancient Babylonia, Greek, Chinese

and Indian mathematicians were
discussing and using algebra a long
time before the book was published.
 Define the meaning of Algebra
A branch of mathematics
dealing with symbols and the rules for
manipulating those symbols. In
elementary algebra, those symbols
(today written as Latin and Greek
letters) represent quantities without
fixed values, known as variables.
 Identify and define some important
terms in algebra.
Constant – A number on its own.
ex. 1,2,3
Variable – is a symbol, usually letters,
which represents a value or a
number.
ex. a,b,c,x
Term – is a constant/constants or a
variable/variables multiplied
together.
ex. 8yz, 3abc
Algebraic Expression – is a group of
terms separated by the plus or minus
sign.
ex. x -2 or 5x + 4
V. Evaluation:
Worksheet:
Instruction: On one-fourth paper kindly answer the following questions.
1. What is the Arabic word for algebra which means restoration?
2. Who is the father of algebra?
3. What branch of mathematics that deals with symbols and the rules for manipulating those
symbols?
4. What do you call to a group of terms separated by the plus or minus sign?
5. What do you call a symbol, usually letters, which represents a value or a number?
6. What do you call a constant or a variable multiplied together?
7-10. Briefly explain the importance of algebra.

VI. Generalization:

 In this lesson, you learned about the short history of algebra, the importance of algebra,
the definition of algebra, and you can now identify and defined some important terms in
algebra.
VII. Homework:

 So for your assignment, site at least 5 importance of algebra and answer pages 115-116,
the exercises and and the final problem.
