SUMMER INTERNSHIP / WORK EXPERIENCE

Structural Engineer, NCPE Infrastructure India Private Limited Jan 2020 - Jun 2020
INTRODUCTION
The 6 - month internship at NCPE Hyderabad, from January to June 2020, is part of the Practice School - II (PS - II) which is a compulsory
academic course in the final semester of M.E. Structural Engg. at BITS Hyderabad. This course was intended to give a student first - hand
experience in structural consultancy and design practice. NCPE is a premier urban infrastructure design and Project Management Consultancy
firm with its head office at Hyderabad. It prepares DPRs, Designs, Drawings, Estimation & Bill of Quantities etc. for Central, State, Local
Governments & third parties.
OBJECTIVES
The objectives/scope of the projects undertaken was to perform analysis and design of various structures and structural elements.
The following are the key objectives:
a. To get an understanding of various architectural plans.
b. To know about column positioning and center line drawing of column and its orientation.
c. To identify the economical cross sections that are suitable in design of particular structures.
d. To understand the design procedure of various structures like residential and commercial buildings.
e. To design the structures that are resistant to Earthquake and Wind loads.
f. To learn practical approach to analysis and design of structural elements throughout project duration & application to real time ongoing
projects.
g To apply theoretical knowledge of design of structural elements from Indian Standards in completing the projects.
PROJECTS UNDERTAKEN/COMPLETED
At this firm, I have -
1. Worked on proportioning and location of different rooms from the given site layout plan of a 2BHK apartment building.
2. Modelled, analysed and designed the above building in STAADPRO software.
3. Analysed and designed retaining walls for given site conditions.
4. Modelled, analysed, designed and detailed Commercial structures in ETABS software with and without use of flat slab panels.
5. Designed circular RCC cover slab simply supported by circular walls for 2 different loading cases (Live Load) and material geometries (slab
diameter and wall thickness) using Working Stress method.
6. Design of circular RCC base slab for a 5 m dia. collection well consisting of a pump house and a reception well using Working Stress Method.
2 key projects were:
a. ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF COMMERCIAL COMPLEX AT EXISTING TOWN HALL SITE IN NALGONDA MUNICIPALITY USING ETABS.
b. ANALYSIS OF 2BHK RESIDENTIAL APARTMENTS UNDER GHMC HOUSING SCHEME USING STAAD PRO.
The procedure followed for the above 2 projects in the softwares was as follows:
1. Studied the given AUTOCAD plan by the project supervisor.
2. Fixing columns based on the geometry of the plan.
3. Preparing a column centre line and grids for the given plan.
4. Modelling the structure in STAAD PRO/ETABS by using the column centre line drawing.
5. Assigning the sectional properties to the structure.
6. Assigned different types of loads like:
Dead load which includes wall loads, self-weight of the structure, weight of the slab.
Live load
Floor finish
Earthquake loads
Wind loads
7. Analysed the structure for earthquake and wind loads as per IS 1893 2002 and IS 875 part3 based on the locality of structure.
8. Designed the beams and columns reinforcement in STAAD PRO/ETABS.
9. Checking whether the sections provided will be sufficient or not, if not revise the sections and making sure all the members are passing the
design criteria.
PROJECT'S CONTRIBTION TO THE ORGANIZATION
As the projects assigned to me were being pursued by the company live at the time, the prerequisite research carried out by me & the results of
analysis obtained by me were useful to the organization to complete the projects within the given time & and also for future projects.
CONCLUSION
During my internship, I got a chance to work in many departments to know about how a construction company proceeds to solve and design
everyday practical problems. The term I spent at N.C.P.E. was more engaged with the learning part through an assistant-ship. All my experience
helped me realize elements like grouping work, peering support, work environment, carried out in the organization. Thus, the internship duration
provided me with such opportunity to broaden my knowledge, and acknowledge my strengths/ weakness that would help me to shape up my
career in the near future.
At the end of this PS course work the following learning goals are achieved successfully.
Application of my gained skills and knowledge
Understanding of the organization’s framework
Working in a professional environment with experienced people in the industry
Ability to work as a good team player
Enhancement in my learning capability and technical aspects
Presentation of the given work
Thus, the practice school course work was a useful and satisfactory experience. I got the new insights into the professional practice. This helped
me to identify the areas of my strengths and weaknesses and what needs improvement in the coming time.

DL for exterior walls = 0.23 x 19.1 x 3.2 = 12.74kN/M Suresh Sharma
DL for interior walls = 0.115 x 19.1 x 3.2 = 6.36kN/m
Parapet wall = 0.23 x 19.1 x 1 = 4.39kN/m
Lift wall load = 1.5 x 0.23 x 19.1 = 6.589 kN/m
Lift wall load = 2.5 x 0.23 x 19.1 = 10.982 kN/m
Staircase wall load = 2.7 x 0.23 x 19.1 = 11.86 kN/m

Earthquake zone = zone II (Hyderabad)
Soil Type = II
Zone factor (Z) = 0.1
OMRF (R) = 3
Importance factor (I) = 1.5 (commercial buildings) where risk of losing life’s will be more).
Scale factor = (I*g)/ (2*R)
= (9810 X 1.5) / (2 X 3)
= 2452.5
If the dynamic base shear reported is more than 85% of the static base shear, no further action is required. However, if dynamic base shear is
less than 85% of the static base shear, then the scale factor should be adjusted such that the response spectrum base shear matches 85% of
the static base shear.
New scale factor = (I*g/ 2*R) *(0.85* static base shear/response spectrum base shear)
