A t sixteen, Beeyong played his first Open Tennis professional event, an inaugural ATP
Asian Tour in Indonesia, including a doubles match against the 1973 World Champion
John Newcombe. Beeyong is a protégé of Willie Hernandez Jr, the 1960's Wimbledon
player who defeated tennis legend Arthur Ashe at a 4-day Arizona
tournament. At 17, Beeyong was awarded a full athletic scholarship by
Odessa College in Texas U.S.A. under coach Virginia Brown, where he
was ranked No. 1 by the National Junior College Association (NJCAA) in
1975.

The following year, Beeyong was undefeated in junior college singles

play winning the 1976 NJCAA Singles Championship held in Scottsdale,
Arizona. He then teamed-up with fellow-Wrangler Perfecto Alina Jr., the
1975 NJCAA Singles Champion, and captured the doubles crown. Beeyong Texas' product
Beeyong Sison,
was named to the “All-American Team” having led Odessa College to two
NJCAA Team Championships in 1975 and 1976. The years 1977 saw
Beeyong being awarded a full scholarship (Business Administration) by
Oklahoma City University and making it to the NCAA top College Players of America. Sison
played No. 1 for OCU team which included Australian John Fitzgerald who went on to win seven
Grand Slam doubles titles, and a career men's doubles Grand Slam winning all four titles-the
Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open in one year – he was ranked world’s
No. 1 doubles player in 1991. Also with Beeyong in the OCU team was Australian John McCurdy
who later on reached No. 70 ATP world ranking and served as the Australian Institute of Sports as
Tennis Director.

In 1978 Beeyong built-up a singles win-loss record of 28-3 for OCU including singles wins over
All-Americans Steve Denton (Texas), and Kevin Curren (eventual Wimbledon singles runner-up to
Boris Becker), subsequently winning him a Division 1 Singles Bid Selection (top 64) for the US
NCAA Singles Championships in Athens, Ga. bowing out to Erick Iskersky of Trinity – the event
was eventually won by John McEnroe of Stanford University.

ATP Pro Tour

Turning pro and joining the ATP Tour in 1979, Beeyong went on to play in Wimbledon , the
U.S. Open, French Open and Australian Open Grand Slam events and also represented the
Philippines in the Davis Cup. In 1981, Beeyong (a.k.a.Beejong Sisson) reached the Doubles
Quarter-Finals in the French Open.

He also reached the round of 16's for both the South Australian Open in Adelaide (Singles) and the
World of Doubles ATP Championship in Florida with Swiss partner Markus Gundthart.
3
In Florida , Beeyong saw action against world’s doubles greats Stan Smith and Bob Lutz. In
1982, Beeyong reached the third round of doubles at the French and U.S. Open and round of 16's at
Wimbledon. In 1982 he saw action at the US Hall of Fame Singles Championships where his run
was stopped by Anand Amrithraj of India in the last 16s. From 1979 until 1984, Beeyong played
against the world’s top 20 players such as Guillermo Vilas of Argentina, Eliot Teltscher of the
United States. Beeyong has singles wins over Australian, John Marks, the Australian Open Finalist;
Onny Parun of New Zealand, 1981 Wimbledon Quarter-
finalist; Larry Stefanki (ATP Tour event winner); and
Brazilian Davis Cupper Thomas Koch.

The years between 1979 and 1984, Beeyong would

regularly meet-up with Odessa College coach Virginia
Brown during Grand Slam events who was then also
guiding WTA Pro standout Sandy Collins. They were
proud moments for the Texas Hall of fame coach to see
her protégés eventually wield rackets with the world’s
best.

World Class Mentor: Beeyong (standing left) led BLTC to three

When Beeyong retired from professional ATP tour National Swiss Interclub League
Championship wins in 1982 (as pro player),
in 1984, he accepted an invitation to serve as the Head 1988 and 1991 as coach and player.
Pro at the Basel Lawn Tennis Club (BLTC). Beeyong
instituted a comprehensive program that led the growth
and development of several juniors who become the
region’s best players. Beeyong also served as the Swiss National Coach Assistant between 1986 and
1988, and works as consultant to numerous international tennis organizations. In 1989 Beeyong
formally established the International Tennis School (ITS) of Basel in Switzerland.

Although busy teaching, Beeyong also led BLTC to three National Swiss Interclub League
Championship in 1982 (as pro player), 1988 and 1991 (as a player-coach). The club-leagues are part
of the lucrative, well-structured European League competition which include football (soccer),
basketball, and ice hockey participated by national and international athletes.

Nation-Building and the Dwight Davis Legacy

After sixteen years of residency in Switzerland,

Beeyong decided to move back home to help his country. In
1996, the Philippine Tennis Association named him the
Davis Cup Captain where he served until 1998 while taking
the team to Group One status (www.daviscup.com).
Sensing the need for more sports facilities in his country, in
1999 Beeyong invested and focused his efforts in the
development of a tennis and sports complex inside the new
Subic Bay Freeport Zone. Subic Bay was formerly a United Beeyong with Wimbledon 1987
Champion Pat Cash at the Subic Bay
States Naval Facility from 1902 until 1992.
Tennis Cente in 2004: ITS tie-up with
Pat Cash Academy in Brisbane,
Beeyong’s investment in the center is based on a 25-year Australia produced RP national and
lease-contract (2003-2027) which secures a long-term asian champions and medalists.
continuation of development programs. The Subic Bay
International Tennis Center (SBITC) is managed by the
Subic Bay Sports Management, Inc. where Beeyong serves
as the founding president. The center is now home to the ITS Academy and is used as a venue to the
National Open Tennis Championships. The center is open for general usage as a Public Park and
Recreation facility within the community of business locators, visitors, residents and their families:

Since 2002, Subic Bay programs have produced national champions including Asian Games
Medalists and US Scholar-Athletes. From 2003 on-going visits by 1987 Wimbledon Champion Pat
Cash and international coaches including former OCU teammate John McCurdy, the Tennis
Director of the Australian Institute of Sports, contribute to the success of ITS in Subic Bay to this
 day. The Subic project is Beeyong’s
contribution to the on-going legacy of
Dwight F. Davis of St. Louis, the U.S.
scholar-athlete and the donor of the Davis
Cup team competition in 1900 to foster
international competition between nations. A
Harvard student and the inter-scholastic
Doubles Champion of America, Davis went
on to become an influential politician under
the administration of President Hoover. Davis
was appointed as the U.S. Public Parks
 Commissioner in 1911 and later became the
Philippines’ Governor-General in 1929. He was instrumental in the development of tennis in the
Philippines

5
when he built tennis courts and sports facilities in almost every municipality across the country.
Davis’ influence in the Philippines is evidently shown with the construction of the Rizal Memorial
Sports Complex in 1936, where three stadiums were built originally for tennis. The Philippines
joined the Davis Cup Competition in 1926.

Clearly, Beeyong is a product of Davis’ legacy. The most prized personal achievement of Beeyong,
besides becoming a scholar-athlete in Odessa and Oklahoma, is winning the U.S. National Public
Parks Singles Championships in 1978 held in St. Louis, Missouri, Davis’ hometown. Beeyong went
on to represent the Philippines in the Davis Cup as a player (1980-83) and as a Captain and Coach
of the team (1996-98) – an honor he cherishes to this day.

In 2007, a Sport-Tourism National Strategy was written and drafted by Beeyong for the
Philippine government submitted to Office of the Philippine then-President Gloria Macapagal-
Arroyo, the Department of Tourism and the Philippine Sports Commission. Beeyong’s energy will
continue to focus on promoting sports for education for all levels and on advocacy for continued
development of public park and recreational facilities.
