MODULE 1 - GATHERINGAI\D PROCESSING INFORMATION

1. Say to the candidates:

In this section of the examination, you are reqaired to answer four questions hased on the
reading of an extractfrom a piece of communication.

First, I will give youfive minutes to read through the questions, silently. Then I will read you
the utract twice. may make notes while you listen to the readings.

3. Say to the candidates:

You now have five minutes to read through the questions, silently. I will tell yoa when five
minutes are up. Begin to read silently.

4. After 5 minutes, say to the candidates:

I shall now read you the extracL

And this is how I see the East. I have seen its secret places and have looked into its very
soul; but now I see it always from a small boat a high outline of mountains, blue and

afar in the morning; like faint mist at noon; a jagged wall of purple at sunset. I have the
feel of the oar in my hand, the vision of a scorching blue sea in my eyes. And I see a bay,
a wide bay, smooth as glass and polished like ice, shimmering in the dark. A red light
burns far offupon the gloom of the land and the night is soft and warm. We drag at the
oars with aching arms, and suddenly a puffof wind, a pufffaint and tepid and laden with
strange odours of blossoms, of aromatic wood, comes out of the still night the first sigh
of the East on my face. -

6. After you have read the extract, pause for a few seconds and then say to the candidates:

You now have twenty minates to answer the questions, in writing. I will tell you when 15 minutes
arc up. Then I will tell you when twenty minutes arc up. Begtn to write your ansuters to the
questions.

7. After 15 minutes, say to the candidates:

Filteen minutes are up.

8. After 20 minutes, say to the candidates:

Twenty minutes are up. Stop writing.

9. Collect the candidates' scripts.
