Mithila, the birthplace of Sita of the Ramayana, lies in the state of Bihar, bounded by the
Himalayas in the north and the rivers Kosi, Ganga and Gandak in the east, south and west
respectively. Over centuries, the people of Mithila have developed their own tradition of art,
popularly known as Madhubani painting, named after a district and a town in the region.
What is unique about this tradition - which dates back to the 7th century A.D., and is
prevalent even today - is that it is the
women who mastered and practised it.

Janak (Ramayana) during the time of her
daughter Sita Marriage. Months before
people of Janak Nagri (mithila) had
participated to prepare different design
on the wall of their house to celebrate
Sita¶s marriage. Wall of houses was
covered by different design and whole Nagri (region) was full of design. Since then people
are making different design on the wall of their house.‘

In late 1900, first time it prepared on the paper and canvas for business purpose. It has been
keeping huge demand due to its nature because uses to prepare by natural colors. Paintings
are based on God and Goddess, animal, sun, moon, planets, plants, and some other attractive
designs.

Sita Devi of Jitwarpur village, Baua Devi and Ganga Devi were the pioneers in transforming
the Mithila Paintings from village walls onto paper and canvas. The present-day notable
artists include Sarita Devi (daughter of Baua Devi), Pushpa Kumari, Karpuri Devi,
Mahasundari Devi, Godawari Dutta, Jamuna Devi and Lalita Devi‘

The main themes of Madhubani paintings contain images of Hindu deities such as Krishna,
Ram, Shiva, Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati. Also people are able to find beautiful paintings
of sun, moon and tulsi or the sacred basil plant revered very much by the Hindus. Scenes of
royal courts and social events such as celebration of wedding are also beautifully depicted in
Madhubani paintings. The main categories in Madhubani paintings are:

The art of Madhubani painting requires skill and implies a certain technique. This technique
requires simple raw materials that
are easily located in villages such
as bamboo sticks and cotton.

Firstly the cotton is wrapped


around a bamboo stick to serve as
a brush. Then the brush is dipped
in colors and applied on to the
fabric. No shading technique is
used. The outline is done with
double lines. The gaps between the
two lines are filled with cross or
straight lines. Colors are not used
in linear paintings.

Madhubani painting has been done traditionally by the women of villages around the present
town of Madhubani (the literal meaning of which is     ) and other areas of
Mithila. Painting is an expression of day-to-day experiences and beliefs. Madhubani painting
is a traditional art symbolism, simplicity and beauty. In this painting, the treatment of color is
beautifully done. The themes of daily activities, nature, flora and fauna and Hindu Gods are
the most prominent.

unique nature. People are form different
places are coming to Madhubani Mithila
paining centre to purchase different
designs of cloths and paintings.

  This paining is related with


Ramayana, so by belief of people
promotion has taken place but government and people both are working together to promote
and make sure its availability as it is the livelihood of thousands of family. Promotion is also
done through exhibition, mela, haat, electronic and print media. It is also available in
Museums.
