MERLIN Test

AIM OF THE STUDY:

The objective of this test is to determine roughness of the road surface using MERLIN Test.

RELEVANT STANDARDS:

1. IRC: SP:16-2004: Guidelines for Surface Evenness.

2. TRRL 229 (Transport and Road Research Laboratory).

3. IRI [International Roughness Index] scale: Used as Standard Roughness Scale.

RELEVANCE AND IMPORTANCE:

The roughness of road's surface is an essential measure of road condition and a key aspect in
determining vehicle operating cost. A simple machine measuring roughness has been designed
specially for use in developing countries. It is known as MERLIN (Machine for Evaluating
Roughness using Low-cost Instrument).
