HOW TO PUT DROPS IN YOUR
DOG’S EARS + 3 BONUS RECIPES
The inside of your dog’s ear doesn’t look anything like the inside of your ear. If
you’re putting drops in her ears as you would your own, those drops probably
aren’t doing much good!
When you look in a dog’s ear canal, and I mean really look, you’re actually only
seeing a small portion of the whole canal. That means you’re probably only actually
cleaning and treating part of the infection when you put ear drops in.
That’s probably why your dog’s ear infection comes back even after you’ve put
drops in her ears. It’s because those drops are only getting into the vertical canal
but not making their way into the horizontal canal.
Vertical Canal
Horizontal Canal
Here’s the easiest way to make sure that solution is getting where it needs to be to
fight the infection:
1 Gently pull your dog’s ear straight up and hold it with one hand.
Carefully drop the liquid into your dog’s ear into the vertical part of the canal.
2 Keep the ear flap up. This is key: hold the flap up and keep the position long
enough for the medication to run down into the horizontal canal, at least 1
minute but even longer is better.
3 Gently massage the ear canal between your thumb and fingers to help it get
deep into the horizontal canal.
4 Release the ear flap. Don’t worry if your dog shakes her head – that’s
totally normal.
BONUS RECIPES!
1. Basic ear flush – to clean out the ears
Combine
1 part apple cider vinegar
1 part witch hazel tincture
1 part aloe vera juice
Massage half a dropperful into the ear canal. Don’t let your dog shake her
head for a few minutes. Do this for 2 days. Flush it again with the basic ear
flush on the 3rd day. Repeat this
process for a total of 12 days.
Use to flush out the ear a couple times per week. Shake well before
using and store in the refrigerator.
