Coming Home German Nobility –

New Horizons
It’s not just a blessing to be born into a centu-
ries-old noble dynasty. After all, the privileges
of the nobility in Germany were removed
almost 100 years ago, and aristocratic titles
are now just part of a family name. But nev-
ertheless, many people are still fascinated by
stories about major aristocratic families and
their members.
An important question posed by many of
the descendants of famous noble families is
how to maintain the family residence. The

A Tense Spring
2 011 is set to be a bumper election year in Germany. After elections in the state of
Hamburg in February, a new state assembly for Saxony-Anhalt is to be elected on
20 March – and one week later, it’s the moment of truth for Baden-Württemberg
and Rheinland-Pfalz. The Journal will be broadcasting comprehensive cover-
age of all these elections.
Analysis will also be provided by People and Politics. The magazine is
taking an especially close look at Stuttgart. For a year now, the capital of the state
of Baden-Württemberg has made headlines with its large-scale protests against
the rail transport project “Stuttgart 21.” Will popular displeasure be reflected in
the election result? Stephanie Gräfin Bruges von Pfuel and Schloss Tüssling Photo: dpa

Beauty, the Beast and a Bite to Eat Green Mobility for

the Future
This year, Made in Germany reports on past
and future developments in the auto industry.
On 1 March, the business magazine dedi-
cates a special edition to alternative propul-
sion technology – with a focus on the theme
“green mobility for the future.”
 Future mobility should be eco-friendly
and sustainable. By 2020, one million cars on

Literature from Serbia

The Leipzig Book Fair is regarded as a showcase for literature from southeastern
Europe. It’s a tradition that is being taken up again in 2011. Serbia is this year’s
guest nation at the event, which aims to raise the profile of the country’s literature
on the German-language market. Not that Serbian literature has an easy time
of it at home. Twenty years after the start of the Yugoslav Wars, there is little
interest in sophisticated works – and only a few writers are attempting a literary
reckoning with recent history. Arts.21 travels to Serbia and presents some of
the nation’s better-known and lesser-known writers. The authors explain why
every public appearance is so important for the country – and what literature BMW’s “MINI E” electric car Photo: BMW AG
can achieve, despite all the obstacles.
