Sender/Receiver Relationship: (Think: Who are the senders and receivers of the messages in the text and what is
their relationship? Be specific. Consider the various audiences the book may be addressing.)
I believe the senders and receivers of the message have a relationship in which the sender is irritated and
attempting to teach the receiver a lesson. It is clear that the sender, a college professor, is addressing students
when he says, “ They must recognize that their attitude is not only self-destructive, but socially destructive.” I know
this because he is sharing a message that he wants students to hear. Furthermore, I know they have an irritated
relationship because the sender has written in an annoyed tone.
Message: (Think: What is the literal summary of the content? Be concise yet specific. What themes, meaning, or
significance should the reader draw from this information?)
Emotional Strategies (pathos): (Think: What appeals to sentiment does the author use? Speculate on the author’s
purpose: what could be the desired effect? How does the author evoke emotion within the audience?)
Logical Strategies (logos): (Think: What strategic/argumentative appeals does the author use? How does the author
persuade with reasoning, using facts and figures? What is their effect?)
Language: (Think: How does the author use specific language (diction, syntax, imagery, figurative devices, etc.) to
support the message of the text? How does this use affect the text’s effectiveness? Be specific.)
