WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Presentation of the Lesson

It is very important for you to learn the historical background and basic concepts
that you will need as you go on with the lessons. Our discussion will focus on the vocal and
instrumental music of Southeast Asian countries particularly in Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos,
Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Music in Southeast Asia is
frequently related to ceremonies connected with religion, the state, community festivals,
and family affairs.

When you travel especially in a foreign country, you need to have an idea about
their culture. You need to know what kind of food they have, their mode of
transportation, type of clothes to wear, important sights or places to visit, the religion,
music, and so many other things. Each country has its distinct characteristics and
knowing about them will help you adapt and cope with their culture. One way of
learning culture is through their music

VOCAL MUSIC
Vocal music is music made specifically for voices. It may be performed with or
without instruments while Instrumental music is made solely for instruments. The role of the
voice in music making differs from that of European music in both concept and execution.
Men’s and women’s voices are each not divided into high and low ranges but are used
for their color qualities.

VOCAL MUSIC IN SOUTHEAST ASIA

• RASA SAYANG - The phrase “rasa saying” indicates both the act of feeling love or
affection and the feeling of love itself. The folk song and the phrase itself,
encapsulates much of the Malay character — that special combination of
conviviality, playfulness, earthiness, sensuality, subtlety and charm. One could
perceive it as a doorway to the Malay personality and psyche, as well as a lens
through which one may view aspects of Malaysia’s collective subliminal self.

6
• BURUNG KAKATUA - a folk song from Indonesia about the
cockatoo (kakatua) and the village grandmother who
listens to it sing. It comes from Ambon in the Moluccas , but
has spread found in other parts of the Indonesian
archipelago and beyond. The language is also the Malay,
the language of instruction in all the relevant islands. http://tizmoretshoshana.org/vocal-music.html

• CHAN MALI CHAN - a widely known folk song attributed to both Malaysia and
Singapore. It is a cheeky, flirtatious love song, which has gained standing as one of
the traditional “national” songs of both countries. The lyrics are in Malaysian and we
are learning only the first verse and chorus in both Malaysian and English. The
following explanation may be of help in explaining why a love song is being sung
to both a goat and a human.

• BAHAY KUBO - a house made of bamboo with a roof of nipa leaves, surrounded by
different kind of vegetables, which was usually sang by Filipino school children.
Bahay Kubo" literally translates as "Cubed House". The name comes from when
American teachers went to the Philippines to teach. They were fascinated by the
square houses that comprised of just one room. Yet this song is commonly
translated as "Nipa Hut" since these house are made with nipa palm leaves and
bamboo showcasing the different vegetables present in bahay kubo.

There are two basic kinds of Indonesian music scale:

o Slendro – five (5) equidistant tones in octave

o Peloq – heptatonic (7) tone scale with semi tone

Both vocal and instrumental music in Indonesia use slendro and peloq scales.

o Polyphonic stratification kind of melody is a result of hocket/Interlock.

o Interlocking is a common technique used in gong ensembles

1. Pesindhen is a female soloist singer who sings with a Gamelan

2. Gerong refers to the unison male chorus that sings with the gamelan

Music of Thailand is theoretically based on the five-tone or seven-tone scale system.

It is not only confined to the royal courts but is also used extensively in dance, theatre, and
in ceremonies. Thai folk music consists of simple songs with simple melodic lines. Its main
focus in singing is the articulation of the text rather than the style or technique of execution.
Songs of Thailand have inherently poetic lyrics which allow a singer or performer to easily
define the melodic lines. It provides the singer the opportunity to improvise song text to
suit the given occasion. The interpretation of a singer gives meaning to the sacred and
spiritual essence of songs with free rhythm while melodies may either be interpreted or
written in the high or low register with long or short durations.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC

A music wherein instruments are needed to produce music. Kinds of

instruments varies from woodwind(aerophones), percussion (metallophones)
(membranophones) and stringed instruments. (chordophones). Although gong
orchestras consisting of gongs, metallophones, and xylophones bind Southeast Asia
into one musical cultural group, the types of ensembles and sounds they form may
be classified into four areas. Java and Bali make up one unit because of their
predominant use of bronze instruments in orchestras that make
one homogeneous sound. Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia form another subdivision,
with families of musical instruments producing heterogeneous sounds: the bronze
group makes slowly decaying sounds, wooden xylophones play short sounds, and
a reed blows a penetrating melody accompanied by a fourth group of cymbals,
drums, and another gong. Burmese orchestras differ from the Indonesian and Thai
groups by the unique use of a row of tuned drums (sometimes called a drum circle),
with sounds consisting of sharp attacks and quick-vanishing waves. The fourth area,
Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines, uses several types of suspended and
horizontally laid gongs. These gongs produce various combinations of sounds. Gongs
laid in a row, called kulintang, are melody instruments accompanied by a percussion
group. The most developed melodies are found in Mindanao, and the area of
distribution extends to Borneo, Sumatra, and Celebes, in Indonesia. The sets of tuned
gongs found throughout Southeast Asia are also called gong chimes, gong kettles,
and gongs in a row.

INTRODUCTION TO
SOUTHEAST ASIAN MUSIC

We have known that vocal music uses the human voice itself. While, instrumental music
need instruments in order to perform. Music is an important part of their lives because they
use it for rituals, ceremonies, courting, and entertainment. Most of the instruments are
percussive with an exception of some aerophones and chordophones. Each country’s
musical instruments and even some songs are somewhat similar to each other due to their
history of trading and migration.

Congratulations! You have been able to study the world of South East Asian Music,
but it’s only the beginning. We will learn on the upcoming lessons! You have already
achieved the objectives targeted in the end of this lesson which are to relate Southeast
Asian music to the lives of the people, identify the different songs in Southeast Asia, lastly,
listen and analyze the music of Southeast Asia

You did very well! Us, your teachers are very willing to give your educational needs
amidst this pandemic. We are going to overcome this. Stay safe my dear student!
