INTRODUCTION
This module will tackle the first of the two groups of the dominant approaches and ideas in the
social science disciplines. In social sciences, theories breathe life and provide structure to how we
make sense of what is happening around us. Every theory has its strengths and weaknesses and
provides a different perspective in examining issues.
We will study the role of structures in examining individual behavior and social and political
phenomena in general. Structural Functionalism, Marxism, and Symbolic Interactionism assert
particular views on how social structures shape and reshape the world as we know it.
