Check Soil Bearing Capacity

For 300 ton mobile crane platform

Assumption
a) Minimum allowable safe bearing capacity of compacted soil = 50KN/m 2

Procedures
b) The existing ground of 14m x 8m for crane to park shall be compacted by roller.
c) Six pieces mild steel plate of 6m x 2.4m x 0.025m shall be placed at top of the compacted soil

Loading
d) 300 ton mobile crane = 3000 KN
e) Mild steel plate (6x2.4x0.025x7850)x6 = 2826kg x 6
= 169.56
Total loading on the compacted ground surface within two pieces mild steel plate= 3169 KN
The total loading is distributed within sixr pieces 6m x 2.4m steel plate = 36.68

Factor of safety = 50/37

= 1.35 Ok

For 100 ton mobile crane platform

Assumption
a) Minimum allowable safe bearing capacity of compacted soil = 50KN/m 2

Procedures
b) The existing ground of 8m x 6m for crane to park shall be compacted by roller.
c) Two pieces mild steel plate of 6m x 2.4m x 0.025m shall be placed at top of the compacted soil

Loading
d) 100 ton mobile crane = 1000 KN
e) Mild steel plate (6x2.4x0.025x7850)x2 = 2826kg x 2
= 56.52KN
Total loading on the compacted ground surface within two pieces mild steel plate= 1056 KN
The total loading is distributed within two pieces 6m x 2.4m steel plate = 106

For 100 ton crane Factor o safety = 50/36

= 1.38 Ok
Check Soil Bearing Capacity

For 300 ton mobile crane platform

Assumption
a) Minimum safe bearing capacity of compacted existing soil (assume the worse of wet clay) = 50KN/m 2
b) Total loading to be lifted = 23.5 ton

Pressure applied by outrigger feet

Pout = 0.65 x (total crane mass + lifted load)
(Individual outrigger area)
50 = 0.65 x (3000 + 235)
Area
Area = 42.055 m2
Therefore, length x width of steel plate required for each outrigger = 6.48m x 6.48 m.

Relationship between mackintosh probe and safe bearing capacity

P = (2860+ 550 (R - 40)1/2) x 0.04788 kN/m2      for blows > 40

P = Refer Chart                                                    for blows < 40

            Where,
              P = safe pressure (kN/m2)
              R = Mackintosh Probe Penetration resistance in blows/0.3m
