During:
Anaphylaxis
Monitor for
manifestations of
hypersensitivity.
Discontinue drug
and report their
appearance
promptly.
Monitor I&O rates
and pattern: Report
any significant
changes.
Report onset of
loose stools or
diarrhea. Although
pseudomembranou
s colitis rarely
occurs, this
potentially life-
threatening
complication should
be ruled out as the
cause of diarrhea
during and after
antibiotic therapy.
After:
Instruct patient to
take medication
around the clock at
evenly spaced times
and to finish the
medication
completely, even if
feeling better
Advise patient to
report signs of
superinfection and
allergy
Instruct patient to
notify health
professional if fever
and diarrhea
develop
Patient and family
education
Tell your doctor and
pharmacist what
prescription and
nonprescription
medications,
vitamins, nutritional
supplements, and
herbal products you
are taking or plan to
take. Be sure to
mention any of the
following:
anticoagulants
('blood thinners')
such as warfarin
(Coumadin,
Jantoven),
cimetidine, diuretics
('water pills'),
famotidine (Pepcid),
nizatidine (Axid),
omeprazole
(Prilosec, in
Zegerid),
pantoprazole(Proto
nix), probenecid
(Probalan) and
ranitidine (Zantac).
Your doctor may
need to change the
doses of your
medications or
monitor you
carefully for side
effects.
