Student Guide: Cell Respiration - HS Handbook and STEM Case: ATP Our
Introduction: Jared, a CIA agent, has been poisoned by a criminal gang and has been
rescued by Navy SEALs. As a Medical Toxicologist, you will learn the concepts of cellular
respiration and perform an investigation to identify which poison was used to poison
Jared. You will then apply an antidote to save the agent.
Part 1: Directions: Launch the Gizmo and click on the Handbook tab. Use the arrows to navigate the
handbook and learn about Cellular Respiration. As you explore the handbook please answer the sequential
questions below.
Vocabulary: As new vocabulary is introduced, the words are presented in the Gizmo as orange text - clicking
the orange text opens the glossary page for that term. You can use the glossary at any point.
1. Animals, such as humans, use the chemical energy in food to make what molecule? List and describe the
importance of this molecule below.
ATP givesourbodyenergy
2. Metabolism comes from the Greek work for “to change”. Describe the change that is occurring here.

9. By the end of Krebs cycle all the carbon brought in by glucose is gone. Where is it? How do YOU get rid
of it?
Part 2: Directions: Launch the Gizmo and click on the Case tab. Use the arrows to navigate and answer the
sequential questions below.

16. On a separate piece of paper, make a concept map explaining how the four stages of cellular respiration are
related. Insert a photograph of your mind map here. Don't forget to give it a caption!
