Lighting Technology and System Design (EEE4136) – Design Project

1 Abstract
This design project presents and discusses the designing of a stage lighting system in the assembly
hall of a primary school. Stage lighting design is the craft of lighting which allows lighting designers to
create various astonishing effects in an art form. The controller console, dimmer rack, stage
luminaires and all kinds of accessories are generally introduced and chosen to fit the purpose for a
assembly hall, whether for talks, musical shows, dramas, live events. Although improvements can be
made to enrich the complexity of the system and enhance the audience’s experience, such as using a
much powerful console unit which is able to introduce intelligent lighting, the lighting system design
is capable of demonstrating the basic design of a stage lighting setups.

2 Introduction

2.1 Background
Light is the electromagnetic radiation that exists within a certain portion of the electromagnetic
spectrum, in which visible light is part of the spectrum that can be sensed by the human eye. Stage
lighting, just like any other lighting, is the application of light to the performance on stage, theatre,
opera, concert, etc. By the use of various kinds of luminaires and controlling equipment such as
controller console, dimmers and cablings, lighting designers can manipulate people’s focus on the
stage. To ensure the actors and the stage set is clearly illuminated for any action to be seen, to guide
the audience’s attention towards a particular character, or to highlight one part of the stage while
decreasing the intensity to another. Moreover, a good lighting design could create different
atmosphere and moods for different scenarios that the designer wishes their audience to sensate.
The aim of stage lighting is to allow the lighting to flow smoothly with the performance, mostly with
subtle subconscious shifts of emphasis, but also provides sudden and dramatic contrasts when
required. It is an exceptionally powerful tool to provide practical illumination and, most importantly,
enrich communications with audience.

The designing of the stage lighting involves the selection of luminaires and equipment, the positioning
of the lighting fixtures, the visibility of the stage, the area and colour planning divisions. Prior to
achieve good lighting design, each components of the process have to be well-understood.

2.2 Lighting Control Console

Lighting control console, also known as lighting board, is an electronic device used in lighting design
to control multiple light at once. It is able to control the intensity of the lights through the use of
dimmer modules by communicating with the dimmers or other devices in the lighting system via an
electronic control protocol. The most common of protocol used nowadays is DMX512-A. Apart from
dimmers control, it could also control special effects devices such as fog machines and intelligent
lights.

2.3 Stage Lighting Dimmer

Stage lighting dimmer is an essential piece of equipment used to dim the dimmable stage luminaires
by raising or reducing the voltage. A dimmer pack or rack is connected to both the lighting fixtures
and a controller console in order to operate. It allows the installation of dimmers into one central
location and to distribute the controlled power to different circuits of the system. Some dimmer
modules can be replaced with relay modules for the controlling of non-dimmable luminaire. Before
selecting the types of dimmer is suitable, it is important to calculate how much power will be required
for the dimmer system.

2.4 Stage Luminaire

Stage luminaire, or lighting instrument, used in lighting design is a device that produces controlled
lighting as part of the effects. There are a wide variety of lighting instruments nowadays, in which all
are composted from four basic components, the box or housing, the lamp, the lens or opening, and
the reflector. Addition components would vary depend on the exact type of instruments for extra
features. To determine the proper instrument to use in each position of the stage requires the
knowledge of the type of group it belongs to. They can be generally categorized into two groups of
lighting instrument, which is floodlights and spotlights. Floodlights produce a more diffuse light,
which could illuminate a wide area on the stage, whereas spotlights produce a more tightly focused
light beam.

Floodlights are the simplest of all stage luminaires, it consists of a lamp and reflector in a box, but
does not have a lens, that can be panned from side to side and tilted up and down. A floodlight can
have a beam spread of, at most, 120 degrees. It can light up a larger amount of space with the same
wattage and lumen output as a spotlight, therefore is suitable for lighting skies and clothes, but not
selective enough for lighting actors.

JIM HO KUEN (180397953) 3

EG524401/3A
Lighting Technology and System Design (EEE4136) – Design Project

Spotlights can cast a narrow beam of light, usually no wider that 45 degrees, which is more
concentrated and easier to point and control, and is usually smaller in appearance. However, they
appear brighter than floodlights due to more concentrated beams of light. There are two types of
spotlights generally used in stage lighting, which are Fresnel, and Profile Spotlight.

However, some instruments would have a mixture of features could be classified as either a floodlight
or a spotlight, depending on the way it is used and the application. In this project, the selection of
Fresnel, Profile, and Zoom Profile Spotlight with the aid of recent Light Emitting Diode (LED)
technology were chosen to create the lighting effects for the assembly hall.

2.4.1 Fresnel Spotlight

Fresnel spotlight employs a Fresnel lens to wash light over an area of the stage. It was invented back
in the 19th century by Augustin-Jean Fresnel initially for use in lighthouses to solve the problems of
the plano-convex lens. The distinctive lens has a ‘stepped’ appearance instead of the ‘full’ or ‘smooth’
appearance of other lens, which results in a wider, soft-edged beam of light and are commonly used
for back light and top light.

Figure 1: Profile of a Fresnel Lens

Figure 2: Light collimation of a point source with a Fresnel Lens

As shown in above figures, Fresnel lenses can operate close to the light source and are cheap to
produce due to the design and thickness. Fresnel spots use a spherical reflector, with the filament of
the lamp at a fixed focus point of the reflector, which double the light output of the fixture. In stage
lighting, it is most often used for top or back lighting, at medium throw distances. The distinctive soft

beam of a Fresnel can be useful in certain situation. However, the main disadvantage is the lack of
control relative to other spotlight, such as the profile spotlights.

2.4.2 Profile Spotlight

Profile spotlight, also known as Ellipsoidal Reflector Spotlights (ERS), is the most common instrument
type of spotlight used in theatre. The ellipsoidal reflector is used to collect and direct the light through
a barrel that contains a lens or lens train. A Series of four shutters mounted at the internal focal point
allows it for precise shaping and sizing of the unit’s beam as lines. The lens movement in a profile
spot controls the beam quality, where the control of beam size and shape is achieved by adjustments
of the gate.

Figure 3: Construction of a Profile Spotlight

The profile spotlight is able to project a profile of any two-dimensional shape that is placed in the
gate runners, the contrast of the projection can be adjust by the movement of the lens. A mask for
use in the gate is known as a GOBO.

JIM HO KUEN (180397953) 5

EG524401/3A
Lighting Technology and System Design (EEE4136) – Design Project

Figure 4: Diagram of Profile Spotlight

The resulting beam can be adjusted in many ways in a profile spotlight, such as moving the lens,
adjusting the shutter or iris, adding a diffuser or filter, adjusting the distance between the lamp and
the reflector. Such tunings would often be required to achieve the best performance from the
spotlight. The typical beam angle ranges are 19°, 26°, 36° or 50°, which could alter the projected
beam diameters to quarter, half, equal or twice the throw distance respectively.

2.4.3 Zoom Profile Spotlight

Zoom Profile Spotlight, or simply Zoomspot, is similar to a Profile Spotlight, which comprises of two
or more lenses to provide a light beam that can be focused to a soft or hard edge, zoomed from a
wide flood to a narrow spot, and accurately shaped by framing shutters inserted into the gate. The
typical beam angle ranges to maximise the Zoomspots are 25-50° or 18-32°.

Figure 5: Diagram of Zoom Profile Spotlight

In Conclusion, there are still variety range of stage luminaires which can be used for different kinds of
application, but a combination of Fresnel, Profile, Zoom Profile and the uses of recent developments
in LED Technology, which can replace the light source for the above spotlights, are adequate for the
designing of lighting system in this project for an assembly hall.

4 System Description

4.1 Lighting Layout

In this assembly hall stage lighting system, there are three lighting bars, which is divided into the
inner, middle and outer part of the stage. In front of the stage located the FOH bar and two side
bars are placed beside the FOH bar. (Appendix 1)
After planning the layout, calculations were made and the dimmer schedule (Appendix 2) and
system riser diagram (Appendix 3) were conducted accordingly.

4.2 Calculation of Lighting System

Assuming that the diversity factor of all the luminaires is 100%, the power factor and efficiency of all
the luminaires are 0.85 and 0.8.

The luminaires can be divided into 6 circuits as shown in above table circuit IDs,
With each circuit approximate current demand = 31.92/6 = 5.32 A

By dividing the total amount of power in to 3-phase, we would achieve a balanced load,
The average power per phase = 7020/3 = 2340 W

5 Discussions and Conclusions

In conclusion, a total of 34 luminaires comprising of Fresnel, Profile and Zoomspot with LED
technology, a control console and 4 dimmer racks. The control system are capable of distributing
power and controlling all luminaires in 24 independent channels. It provides a basic stage lighting
system design which allows for all kinds of stage performance.

However, in order to achieve an advance system, the control console could be upgrade to a more
