Title: STANDARD SPREADSHEET METHOD
FOR IDEAL BEAM IN SOCKET

This Method is based on a derivation by R Burandt from 1959, this was provided and expanded on in
spreadsheet form by Bosko Zdanksi October 2013

The method is predicated on a perfect fit between the beam/pin and the socket, this creates a linear
bearing load distribution.

Dist. Socket Reaction to Shear Load:

M ws = 10000 / 4 Socket Reaction at Outer End
S ws = 2500 lb/in w₁ = 9750 + 2500
w₁ = 12250 lb/in
Moment at Socket Center:
MT = 6000 + 10000 × 4 / 2 Socket reaction at Inner End
L MT = 26000 inlb w₂ = 9750 - 2500
w₂ = 7250 lb/in
S= 10000 lb Dist. Socket reaction to moment load at socket center.
M= 6000 inlb wM = 6 / 4² × 26000
L= 4 in wM = 9750 lb/in
Dist. from inner end, maximum shear, zero distributed load.
Peak Socket Bearing Reaction: a = 4 × 7250 / (12250 + 7250)
Positive = 7250.0 lb/in a= 1.49 in
Negative = -12250.0 lb/in
Maximum Shear Load
Peak Shear Load in Pin Vmax = - 1.49 × 7250 / 2
Positive = 10000.0 lb Vmax = -5391.0 lb
Negative = -5372.5 lb
Point of Zero Shear
Peak Moment in Pin b = 4 - 2 × 1.49
= 10687.5 inlb b= 1.03 in

Same derivation can be performed but using M/SL as common factor, arriving at slightly different equations and graphs. How
