heads and feel the
presence of the Lord.
Let us pray. In the
name of the Father, and
of the Son, and of the
Holy Spirit. Amen.
Lord, our God, Father of light with Your assistance I will study patiently
and perform my duties conscientiously for your greater honor and glory. Grant me
a bright intellect, a sound judgment and retentive memory. Amen.

Okay class group yourself Karen: Sir my partner is

into two. Vareen.
Liezel: I’ll take Rowena as
my partner Sir.

Since you have found your Students: Okay Sir.

partner we will start the
activity. Okay class do you
know the one of the famous
educational game today it’s
called “4 pics 1 word”. I’ll
give you three sets of
pictures. The group who can
guess what the pictures means
and got a highest score
receive a gift. Just clap your
hands three times to recognize
that you want to guess/answer
the puzzle. If a group has a
wrong answer the other group
is given a chance to answer
the puzzle. You are only given
one chance to answer. Okay
class?

In a count of three you may

start interpreting, analyzing
and guess the pictures. One…
Two… Three!

(The students start guessing

the picture.)

Karen and Vareen: Clap! Clap!

Clap!

Yes Karen and Vareen. What is Karen and Vareen: Fraction

your answer? Sir.

Very Good Karen and Vareen you Karen and Vareen: Thank You
got 1 point for that answer. Sir.

Your welcome! So here is the

second set of pictures. You
may start guessing in One…

Checking is correct!! Good job Liezel and Rowena: Thank you

guys. sir.

Your welcome Liezel and

Rowena. So we are now in the
final round for now each group
has already 1 point each. In
this round the first group who
can guess this set of picture
will be our winner in this
game. So good luck guys and
you may start guessing in One…
Two… Three…

Karen and Vareen: Clap! Clap!

Clap!
Karen and Vareen: Review is
our answer sir.

Karen and Vareen: Thank you

sir.

Yes Karen and Vareen. What is

your answer?

Excellent! Karen and Vareen

your answer is correct. Let’s
give them a round of applause
for our winner and here is
your gift.

C. Presentation of the Lesson

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

Our lesson for this morning

is all about Discriminant. In
our past lesson we tackled
about the quadratic formula
and it stated as x is equals
to negative b plus and minus
square root of b squared
minus 4ac divided by 2a
−b ± √ b2−4 ac
( x=
2a ) . The
quadratic formula makes it
easy to determine the nature
of the roots of a quadratic
equation even without
completely solving the
equation. The number b 2−4 ac
which appears under the
radical sign in the quadratic
formula is called
discriminant. By calculating
the discriminant before
solving the quadratic
equation, we can predict
whether the solutions will be
rational number, irrational
numbers or imaginary numbers.
All: If a, b, and c are
integers, then the type of
Everyone please read! solution of a quadratic
equation a x 2+ bx+ c=0is
determined as follows.

Discriminant Solutions
b 2−4 ac> 0 and Two
square of an different
integer rational
solutions.
b 2−4 ac< 0 and Two
not a square different
of an irrational
integer solutions.
b 2−4 ac=0 One rational
solution.
b 2−4 ac< 0 Two
different
imaginary
solution.

Rowena: Find the discriminant

for the following equations.
Thank you class! Now let’s Determine whether the
have some example. Rowena solutions are rational,
please read the direction. irrational, or imaginary
numbers.

Thank you Rowena. Please take

your seat. Let’s have letter
a) x 2+ 4 x−21=0 first enumerate
the a, b, and c in our first
example a=1 ,b=4 andc=−21.
Then substitute this value in
our equation
b 2−4 ac=( 4)2−4 ( 1 )(−21 )=16+84=100
. Since that 100 is a perfect
square, the solution of this
equation is two different
rational numbers.
All: Yes sir.
Do you understand class?

Okay let’s have example

letter b)9 x 2−6 x +1=0 the same
process enumerate the a, b,
and c in this equation.
Liezel: a=9 , b=−6 , c=1
Liezel can you enumerate it?

Thank you Liezel.

Karen: The next step is
substitute the values in the
Then what is the next step

Karen?
b 2−4 ac=(−6)2 −4 ( 9 )( 1 )=36−36=0 .

Thank you Karen.

Rowena: The solution of this
quadratic equation is one
And now Rowena can you tell
rational equation.
me the solution of this
quadratic equation?

Thank you Rowena.

I think you already know the

process on how to solve
discriminant. Now I have here
individual board work for
you. Solve the discriminant
and state the solution of the
quadratic equation assign to
you and explain your work.
Karen solve no. 1, Vareen no.
2, Liezel no. 3 and lastly
Rowena solve no. 4.
Karen:3 x 2+5 x−9=0 . First I
enumerate the value of
1) 3 x 2+5 x−9=0
a=3 , b=5∧c=−9. Then
2) a 2−16 a+57=0
substitute these values in
3) 6 a 2+17 a−14=0 the discriminant
4) 2 x2 −5 x +1=0 b 2−4 ac=(5)2−4 ( 3 ) (−9 ) =25+108=133
. Since that 133 is not a
perfect square, the solution
in this quadratic equation is
two different irrational
equations.
Vareen: a 2−16 a+57=0.
Following the process on how
to solve the discriminant our
a=1 ,b=−16∧c=57 . Substitute
the values in the
discriminant
b 2−4 ac=(−16)2−4 ( 1 ) ( 57 )=256−228=28
. Since 28 is not a perfect
square the solution of this
equation are two different
irrational equations.

Liezel: 6 a 2+17 a−14=0 . The

same process
a=6 , b=17 ,∧c =−14. Then
substitute the values in the
discriminant
b 2−4 ac=(17)2−4 ( 6 )(−14 )=289+336=625
. Since this is a perfect
square the solution in this
equation is Two different
rational numbers.

Rowena: 2 x2 −5 x +1=0. In this

equation oura=2 , b=−5 , c=1 .
Substitute these values in
the discriminant
2 2
b −4 ac=(−5 ) −4 ( 2 ) (1 )=25+8=17.
Since that 17 is not a
perfect square our solution
in this equation is two
different irrational numbers.

All: Clap! Clap! Clap!

Very Good class! Give

yourself a round of applause.

D. Synthesis
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

Class let’s go back to our

game earlier. These three
words here have something to (The students are listening

Discriminant. What do you
think the connection of that
word in our topic this
morning?

Anyone who can try. Yes Karen: Maybe sir the

related to our topic
discriminant because we get
the b 2−4 ac in the quadratic
formula to determine the
nature of the roots of the
quadratic equation.

Very Good Liezel. How about

the second and third word
Checking and Review can you
give me the connection of
these words in our topic?

Yes, Vareen. Vareen: The connection of the

words checking and review sir
in our topic this morning is
we use the discriminant to
check or review the answer of
the quadratic equation. By
calculating the discriminant
we can predict whether the
solutions will be rational,
irrational or imaginary
numbers.

Thank you so much Vareen. Rowena: I can apply the
