STATISTICAL ANALYSIS WITH SOFTWARE

APPLICATION 3 BSA – 1

Statistical Product and Service Solutions (SPSS)

 SPSS Statistics is a software package used for interactive,

or batched, statistical analysis. Long produced by SPSS Inc., it was

acquired by IBM in 2009. The software name originally stood for Statistical

Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), reflecting the original market,

then later changed to Statistical Product and Service Solutions. (Retrieved

from: https://www.ibm.com/products/spss-statistics)

 SPSS provides data analysis for descriptive and bivariate statistics,

numeral outcome predictions and predictions for identifying groups. The

software also provides data transformation, graphing and direct

marketing features. (Retrieved from: https://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/SPSS-

Additional Narrative: One dependent and multiple independent variables were

entered into the equation using SPSS to try and predict a quantitative or numeric

outcome. In the case of the video provided, we want to predict someone’s level of

perceived stress. He went first by clicking ‘Analyze’ menu, then clicked ‘Regression’,

then ‘Linear’.

He put “total perceived stress” in dependent variable box; “total mastery and

internal states measure” in independent variable box.

The underlying assumptions about dependent variable and independent

variables are; (1) There should be at least two or more independent variables, which

can either be continuous or categorical, (2) There should be a linear relationship

between dependent variable and each of the independent variables.

He went on by checking multiple tick boxes like ‘Estimates; Confidence Intervals;

Model Fits; Descriptive; Part and Partial Correlations; Collinearity Diagnostics’. In

residuals, he checked ‘Case-wise Diagnostics, Outliers and put an input on ‘Standard

Deviation’ box.

The underlying assumptions about Partial correlations accounts the influence of

the control variables on both dependent and independent variables while Part

correlations takes into account the influence of control variables on the independent

variable. Collinearity diagnostics implies that 2 predictor variables are near perfect

linear combinations of one another.

He then proceeded on Linear Regression plots. On Y-axis, he put ZRESID. On

X-axis, he put ZPRED. He also checked ‘Normal Probability plot’ then Save button.

File attached below is the output. He then went on by analyzing each assumption, from

the list given on left part of the screen.

SPSS Software is really helpful in large business firms. It helps us analyze and

better understand our data; solve large and complex business and research problems

because of advanced statistical procedures that help ensure high accuracy and quality

decision making. Although it may be costly, the efficiency and effectiveness is highly

proven, and also reduces data preparation time by identifying invalid values, viewing

patterns of missing data and summarizing variable distributions.
