Dear Uncle Will
You’ve probably (0) heard by now about the failure of our attempt to climb Mount
Everest. I (1) should have listened to you about not attempting it in October.
Obviously, I’m very disappointed, as (2) are all my colleagues on the team, not (3)
least Jonty who says it’ll probably be his last climb. We’re all physically shattered,
and I’ve lost almost 20 kilos (4) despite eating like a horse. Everything was (5) going
so well until that notorious ridge you warned me about. No (6) sooner had we reached
Hunter’s Ridge than the weather changed for the worse. The winds got up from the
south, and then the snow drifts started. It was intensely frustrating, just lying in shelter
(7) unable to move, just 600 metres (8) or so from the summit. Only
(9) after several days of blizzard conditions (10 did we abandon the climb and return
to base camp. Oh well, drop me a line when you have time.
Yours
Ben

Dear Ben
Thanks for your letter – yes, I read all about it in the local paper. Don’t worry, you
(11) couldn’t possibly have done any more. I can’t (12) pretend I’m surprised –
there’s nothing you can (13) do if the elements are against you: it’s no reflection on
you. You did the sensible thing. That last bit of climb is fraught with danger, and
better, more experienced climbers than yourselves have
(14) had to turn back. So let me know if you’re going to have another go – I should
have (15) thought May or June was a much better time for an ascent, anyway.
Best wishes
Will
