The Water Banner
In my teaching from Psalm 23 last week, I shared about the
compound name of the Lord, Jehovah-Nissi, which means that
He is our Banner. He not only raises up a standard for us in our
trials and battles and meets our needs through His own Person,
but He also calls us to be His banner. As soon as someone comes
to Christ, there is the need for the water banner of baptism. It was
not only commanded in the Bible (Matthew 28:19), but also modeled by Jesus
(Matthew 3:16), and demonstrated in all of the New Testament believers (Acts
2:41). We baptize at the beginning of our worship services on a weekly basis. We
also offer the opportunity to give a truly public baptism testimony in the Gulf
four or five times a year. You will have that privilege this Sunday afternoon.

When Israel lifted up their banner, also translated as standard or flag, it was on a
high pole on a promontory or carried on a staff. They were unashamed of their
Lord and His people. It is a uniform for God’s team, so-to-speak. The NBA Clippers
of L.A. have suffered much abuse by fans and have often been a symbol of defeat.
Coach Bill Fitch likened identification with the team to dental drilling without
Novocaine or the Bataan death march! While coaching the Clippers, he said to
the players, “Do your supermarket shopping once a week instead of everyday:
You take less fan abuse that way.” Being baptized in water identifies you with
history’s most successful team, the church, and says to the world that you are
unashamed of Jesus, the Lord Who is exalted.

The banner was also visible, particularly since it was high on a hill or the wall of
a city. Hitler raised the swastika on top of Mount Olympus, the mythical home of
the ancient Greek gods. Of course, his Third Reich which he predicted would last
a thousand years crumbled in less than a generation. Our living and holy God
calls us to draw all people to Himself, “The root of Jesse will stand as a banner for
the peoples. The nations will rally to Him and His place of rest will be glorious”
(Isaiah 11:10). He reigns forever. When they see your immersion, people witness
the watery word of testimony of how Christ died, was buried and raised, and that
He has given you a place of “rest” in His life which is “glorious.”

The banner was often accompanied by the sounding of trumpets to assemble

soldiers (Isaiah 13:2). When you follow Jesus, you take your stand with His people
and picture this in believer’s baptism. It is not done privately but trumps a
verbal confession, which we always ask candidates to share just before they are
immersed, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and my Lord and Savior.”
Do you believe that? Then “What hinders you from being baptized?” (Acts 8:36,
KJV). Do it this weekend!

Guest Reception
There is a guest reception in the Commons immediately following the
Saturday night and Sunday morning 11:00 a.m. service. Come and meet
Dr. Wicker.
Beach Baptism
If you would like to be baptized in the
beautiful Gulf of Mexico, our next Beach
Baptism is this Sunday, February 27th. To
sign-up, please see a member of the Pastoral
Staff immediately following this worship
service.

Please go to www.fbcn.org

“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ

beforehand so that we would walk in them.”

2011 Men’s Conference

Presented by Band of Brothers

Friday Evening, April 1st Saturday Morning, April 2nd

WHERE THE RUBBER MEETS THE ROAD:
How To Live For Christ In a Fast-Paced World
“Let’s get to the bottom line!” Ever said that? Easy to say …
tough to do. But deep down inside, don’t we all want that? Not
the fluffy stuff. Not the superficial. But the REAL stuff. Down
where the rubber meets the road! That’s where REAL men
want to be. Where there is authenticity, reality,
dependability, and consistency. We want to be REAL men
whose words and actions are counted on and trusted. Right?
Then you’ll want to be sure and attend the 2011 Men’s
Conference with Bob Reccord. Bob will challenge us from
God’s Word as he unlocks four critical principles which will get
you to the “bottom line” of living your life in God’s will—at
home, at work, and in service! MEN: this is one conference
Bob Reccord you can’t afford to miss.
