I can't even remember when I started this. It was a long time ago, at least three years. Originally I wanted
to include it with the Best of SenshiStock book but I never developed it as much as I wanted to for the
book. Instead of keeping it unfinished forever on my harddrive where no one would see it, I finally just
decided to upload it here. It's really incomplete but I hope the basic stuff I talk about will be helpful.

The initial pose used is

Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards can be found at DrawRight.com. (It's a great
book, really amazing.)

I really hope that some of you get a lot of use from this! Huge image is huge.

You can use other techniques in combination with this one (like using balls and boxes for different parts
of the body). Use all the tools available to you to make the best art you can make!

Hey there Sakky! I have found this tutorial to be one of

the most helpful tools to share with people over the
years, but I realized today that all of these references are
human references!

Obviously that's because this particular tutorial is focused

on the human form, but I was wondering if you would be F E AT U R E D I N CO L L EC T I O N S

I'm not quite sure what kind of animal(s) I'd feature, and I
would definitely give credit for the original idea/general
formatting and procedure of things (since I'm new to the
whole tutorial thing but also wanting to improve my
game there) but I feel like due to the fundamental
differences between humans and animals, having an

If you'd rather I didn't that's totally fine, I just figured

that it would be a good idea to ask instead of just going

Yes, all of these apply to everything! Even objects
in a still life have gesture. These ideas are not my
own - I've sourced them from many teachers over
the years! Looking forward to see what you come
up with

This is a really great tutorial. I'm already drawing for a

while but I'm kind of new to draw from real life humans
so those poses were great for practise. ^^
Thank you very much.

This is verry hepfull. I don't usually have problems

drawing the human anatomy (at least female bodyes, I
still lack experience on general male body) but sometimes
the poses look very stiff and/or plain. I'll use this tutorial
along with your stocks in oreder to improve! Thanks

I have a book on using reference for fantasy

art that will probably say much the same,
but I do wanna go over this again. If I recall
it's like drawing stick figures over or from
the reference? Maybe I'm mis-
remembering. Actually in my drawing
Gunny The Dollar Man 1:

I partially drew over reference. The gun.

That's probably why it looks so real. It
probably doesn't HAVE to look that real,
given the style, but I only know how to do
one or two things: heave to the side of
realism or not at all lol. I'm not sure I could
draw a "cartoon gun" that would resemble a
Colt Navy 1851 or whatever it is. The rest is
heavily reference reliant. It's basically Clint
Eastwood in The Good, The Bad, and The
Ugly...lol. If you look at even my earlier Civil
War drawings of the character the uniforms
are pretty precise. I remember part of a
Rocky and Bullwinkle story arc where Rocky
and Bullwinkle--including the football team
they were on--all dressed in Confederate
garb, and the style was very simple. I don't
seem to be able to do that. I look at it and it
looks incomplete, raw. I guess it could be
called semi-realism.

This tutorial is more about gesture
which is the overarching movement
of the pose and limbs, but it can be
used in combination with other
techniques like draw over
skeletons/basic shapes to build up
the form.

I have a hard time reconciling

realistic references into a style
sometimes - it's taken me a few
years to kind of work out how much
of the 'real' I need to use to make it
make sense. Still a WIP for me, but
anything technical like guns can be
especially tricky to stylize. Like the
human body, you have to be sort of
familiar with the parts and what
they do before you can exaggerate or

This is so incredibly helpful! I am a fine arts major and feel

like i'm having a lot of issues trying to reconcile my style,
and also how to see. I think that this is a wonderful

many places. It must be really good. Which version is
best? I see a lot of arguments on amazon about the new
one. Thank you for the tutorial.
