Homework #1 (The number of parenthesis indicates the number in Rappaport’s book, 2nd Ed.

Please note some of the questions are just for reading based on historical reason.)

1 (1.1): What is an equation that relates to the speed of light, c, to carrier frequency, f, and
wavelength, λ.
2 (1.13): Why is FM, rather than AM, used in most mobile radio systems today? List as many
reasons as you can think of, and justify your responses. Consider issues such as fidelity,
power consumption, and noise.
3 (1.14): List the factors that led to the development of (a) the GSM system for Europe, and
(b) the US digital cellular system. Compare and contrast the importance for both efforts to
(i) maintain compatibility with existing cellular phones; (ii) obtain spectral efficiency; (iii)
obtain new radio spectrum.
4 (2.3): Create a table that lists all 2G, 2.5G, and 3G mobile telephone standards. Carefully
research the latest sources to determine the following parameters for each standard: a) RF
channel BW; b) peak data rate; c) typical data rate; d) responsible standards body; e)
maximum number of concurrent users; f) modulation type.
5 (2.10): Determine the maximum raw instantaneous data rate that can be provided to a single
user in EDGE, assuming that a single time slot on a single GSM channel is available.
6 (2.11): Find the maximum raw instantaneous data rate that can be provided using IS-95B if
four user channels are dedicated to a single user.

Additional problems:

A1. What are the major differences between 1G cellular systems and 2G systems? What are the
major differences between 2G systems and 3G systems? What are the drivers for 4G/5G
systems?

A2. What factor makes the frequency reuse (or cellular) possible?

A3. List a few systems for home networking.

A4. List the main standards, which have been adopted for 3G systems? What is the major
changes in 5G systems?
